Hi Everyone, I have a question for you all! Have any of you ever heard that a person who had the RNY done Lap is more likely to gain more weight back and faster than a person who had their RNY done Open? Its just a question that is bugging me! I had someone try to tell me that and it just didn't make since to me. Any info on this would be appreciated! Thanks for your help! Your WLS Pal, Jennifer V.

I haven't heard of this, and it really doesn't make sense to me, since the plumbing is all the same... I am interested to see the feedback on this one....... Shawn M.

Hi Jennifer, That is just plain absurd! Who told you such a thing? It doesn't matter if you surgery was done lap. or open it has nothing to do with weight regain. It is natural to regain some weight. Usually any regain more than 10 - 15#'s are caused by poor eating And/or poor exercise habits. You will find that most people *****gain their weight get back into poor eating habits, like eating bad carbs, sugar products, and over eating. We all know once these habits are developed they are very hard to break. The best thing to do is not to even test the waters, and stay away from the foods that caused us to gain our weight in the first place. I am sad to say I tested the carb waters, now I have to fight with all I have to stay away from them. I am learning from other peoples mistakes. I will end this cycle right now before I get any deeper into it. I worked hard to lose my weight and will not let myself get back into old destructive habits. I even left the grocery store a few days ago because I found myself so tempted to buy the junk. I would rather get nothing than to but the garbage. I was able to go back the next day and shop sensibly. The bottom line is if we want to keep the weight off we have to watch what we eat and we need to get some kind of exercise. Hope this helps. God bless you, Annete

i think this might refer to the fact that they can make the pouch smaller with open surgery than with laprascopic surgery. although my surgeon told me that they now can come pretty close with laprascopic.

the surgeon (who did kevin's and melanie's micro-pouches) said i have a micropouch even though mine was done laprascopically. but mine is a little bigger. kinda confusing to me. What Kevin says is true but you have to ask why people who've had WLS and done well will start to overeat again. In some cases it's because their pouch or their stoma stretch and they no longer feel satiated. I have read that people with smaller pouches have less chance of that happening. if that weren't true i can not image why anyone would have had the micropouch done in the first place. my recovery was a breeze compared to people who had open surgery. none of us would be GAPs if we hadn't been overeating. the small pouch size is what helped us stop that behavior. so it's not so black and white as "people who eat too much gain weight". If we didn't need a small pouch to help us not eat so much, we would not have risked our lives to get a small pouch.

No. People who eat more than they burn will gain their weight back. kp
