WLS Mythbuster time!
I have spent a lot of time tonight going to not one, not two, but three reputable medical websites (WebMD, American Medical Association, and a bariatric surgery website) regarding calorie intake and weight loss. People want to debate fact, so here goes. It is a medical fact that it is IMPOSSIBLE to not lose weight if you are taking in less calories than your body needs to maintain weight. People come on this board and "fluff their feathers" with garbage about blaming surgeons and programs because they didn't lose the weight they wanted to loose. I believe the paraphrased quote was "I kept to a 1200 calorie diet and didn't lose much weight". This is medically IMPOSSIBLE unless the patient had VERY rare intestinal conditions. Lets face real facts: people who are not successful with WLS most likely can't come to terms with the clear fact that they didn't follow the prescribed program. Is it easy to follow the "prescribed program"? Hell no. I battle with it every day. That is why I had the surgery in the first place. Do I think people who fail at WLS as less of a person? Heck no, as I know I could easily fall into the same category. I would NEVER look anyone in the eye and say my food issues are resolved. No surgeon ever guaranteed success with this surgery. It is a TOOL. It helps people with mental issues tame the beast we all had - obesity. Was there a guarantee? No. Is it the "be all and end all"? No. Anyone who went into the surgery thinking this surgery was the "cure all" was dead wrong. But to those who haven't lost all the weight they wanted to and are looking for support, simply fess up to the fact they didn't follow the program. I would be a fool not to be supportive because I deal with it EVERY DAY. To use the "it was my surgeon's fault" is a cop out and does not face harsh reality. People bash KP because they don't want to hear the truth. Does KP think he's above everyone else? Absolutely not! He has his deamons to battle just like everyone else. It is all about choices and results. If you didn't have the results you wanted, take a close look in the mirror to find your solution. Some poeple just don't feel comfortable doing that. Like everyone has said repeatedly on this board, the surgeon did surgery on your intestines, not your brain. Come to the table with "I need support because I'm having trouble following the program" and you will get all the support you will ever want. Come to the table with criticism, excuses and blaming anyone but yourself and you will not get support from those of us who battle our deamons every day. It is your choice. However, I will not stand by and watch people attack others who are speaking the truth and attack it only because they can't handle the truth. Now I'll get off my soap box!
I wasn't expecting to sway you, i just wanted to know for my own peace of mind having spent my life being ridiculed for my looks, i'm sensitive to that sort of thing. Thank you for clearing that up. I thought it was probably photochopped but wasn't sure.
and i hate to break the news to you but YOU HAVE FRIENDS.
