Surgery & Diet Pills????
I have a friend whose 20 she just had the same surgery as i have and is at a plateau for her weight loss at the moment. She is ill intent on taking diet pills as an aid in her efforts and is still eating properly and exercising. Isn't there some manor in which this could hurt her after the surgery aside from the main stream risks associated with pills? Any feedback is appreciated so i can relay it to her. Thanks!
*hugs*
Hi Kathryn
I live near you neighbor!! Now your question is a good one, I do know that we malabsorb, so not sure how effective the diet pills would be. I don't think approaching a plateau with diet pills would help, probably hurt. Your body is going to have to rest and adjust. She may need to up calories, protein or water with her exercise schedule. I know every time I incorporate too many carbs during my honeymoon period,,I almost always have a stall, so tell her to shake it up!@!
It depends on what diet pills she is taking. Anything with ephedra or guarana or hoodia is dangerous for anyone, whether they had wls or not. But if she is taking one that is caffeine based then she would be at risk for dehydration and needs to more than double her water intake.
The previous mentioned diet pills are dangerous as they up your heart rate and have been known to throw people into cardiac unstability and can seriously damage valves or even kill you if you are one of the unlucky people that this happens to. I was taking metabolife a few years before surgery, I lost over 100 lbs, but ended up in the hospital with what are called PVC's. They felt like my heart was flipping over in my chest and continued for over 24hrs continuously. Scared the crap out of me and I never took the stuff again. The doctors all agreed that this was a dangerous drug.

Hi Kathryn,
I don't think taking diet pill after having this surgery is a wise thing to do. Besides it's totally not necessary. If she ha**** a plateau that's ok. Her body is just adjusting and she will start to lose again. When I was 6 weeks out I hit a true plateau that lasted a full 6 weeks. On week #7 I started losing again. How far out is your friend? How has her weight loss been so far? Has she talked with her nutritionist about her intake and what she needs to do to start losing again? How long has she been in a plateau? Is this a true plateau where she is not losing any weight (at all) or any inches (at all)? Is she following the pouch rules? Is she drinking enough liquids, getting the right amount of protein, fats, calories, and carbs, without getting to much of any one thing? Please encourage your friend to try other methods before trying diet pills~which we all know don't really work and are not the healthy way to lose weight. Please remind her that the goal of this surgery was to get healthy. Diet pills don't get you healthy, they just mess with your heart. I hope your friend will take time to answer these questions. and talk to her nutritionist. That's what they are there for.
God bless you both,
Annette
