Trying to decide on a Insurance

Hello everyone, Everyone here seems to be a wealth of knowledge, and I hope it will continue with my question(s). Right now its open enrollment at my place of employment, and I am looking at picking up Humana First Coverage in order to get WLS this winter. My question is this: Humana covers everything except a $1000 deductible, and a $250 co-pay for each day of hospitialization. By my calculations, my cost for possible WLS would be roughly $1500. Am I safe to say that for Lap RNY the average length of stay is a couple days? Does the WLS surgeon charge for each check up? Am I missing any other costs? Thanks in advance

Hi Curt, I had my surgery Tuesday and I came home yesterday. I feel really good. I am sipping my protein already. Sipping water and going to go get my nails done today. My gf is driving me. I didn't take pain meds during the night so that was good. That looks like a good option for you. I figure I will be paying about 2k. My insurance is 80/20 I had to pay 500.00 to meet my family deductible. All is good today. Good luck....I recommend this surgery to anyone who wants help losing weight. I know I will be successful. My surgeon charged for each visit, i'm not sure if they all do though. Are you having lap or open? Not everyone goes home at two days, mine was ten days because of complications. But no matter what, i know it will be worth it in the end to do it. Who is your surgeon? Hugs Linda

Hi Curt, About the time I was looking into surgery, my small company was thinking of taking me off of our Blue Cross plan because I only work 32 hours a week. My surgeon's office (at U of M Bariatric Center) has it set up where your follow up costs are all included in the total surgery price that is billed. They assured me that if I could hold on to my coverage through surgery that I wouldn't have a problem after that. I am sure every office is different, so I'd check with your specific dr.s office. I had surgery on a Thursday and was discharged on Saturday and I had a Lap RNY. Good luck to you! Brenda

Hi Curt, They're all different as to how they charge you. Either way they get paid for follow up visits, weather they add in in to the cost of the original surgery or charge later. Most insurances will pay for the cost of follow up care. Do you have a surgeon yet? What area are you in? Some people are in the hospital for a couple of days some are in longer. It all depends on how well your surgery goes and if you had any complications. Best wishes to you as you continue your journey. May God bless you, Annette

I had Blue Care Network but I know that I had my surgery on Monday and came home on Wednesday (3 days in hospital). I had LAP RNY in August. Some people are ready to come home on the 2nd day but I know I wasn't. I completely underestimated the amount of pain I was going to be in and having the 3rd day was a blessing. Any other costs could include any pre-testing. I know I had to have a scope of my stomach. I had to have a stress test. Any visits to your PCP; if you have a co-pay, would be an additional cost. I know that my approval of surgery had a 90 day window. So I didn't have to pay for my 2 week or my 30 day appointment after surgery. I had to get a referral for my 90 day appt and I will have to pay my co-pay of $20. I will have to do that for every additional visit I have at my surgeons office now. Best of Luck. Stacey B
