I had my surgery Oct. 17th and all went well, but lying on my back in a hosptial bed for several days has made my arthritis in my hips and back much more painful. While on the pain meds in the hospital it was bearable, but now I am home and those meds have run out. I called my center, but they can't order me any more fo the pain medicine I was on in the hospital because it is too much of a narcotic. They tell me all I can use is tylenol, which is not doing the job. The pain keeps me up much of the night as I can't find a way to lie down comfortably. Any other arthritics out there who have found a "safe" medication that helps? I know we can't take Motrin anymore, which is what I had been using for it. Thanks for any suggestions! Darleen

You need to contact your docs office to check what can be taken. Generally we can take tylanol products. I smashed that stuff into all kinds of things to make it takable and then found adult liquid. it worked great but the chiropractor really helped me. I was allowed to take prescripion Celebrex after a while for the arthritis in my hands. But do call and ask them first before anything is taken. kp

they can't order narcotics, you have to pick up the scrip, it can't be called in, faxed etc. it has to be picked up in person BUT they can order lortab (liquid form of hydrocodone aka vicodin) by phone. as for over the counter, you can't have ANY NSAIDs. So that pretty much leaves tylenol. Call your doctor and ask if they can give you lortab if the pain is bad enough for something that strong. if not you're gonna be stuck with tylenol. i have bad arthritis and nothing really helps. i've been taking narcotics but it's a bad cycle, you build a tolerance, they give you something stronger, then you build more tolerance etc. before i knew it they were giving me dilaudid and then oxycontin. right now we're working on titrating me off of it. my surgeon says there are other options and he's gonna send me to the pain people at St. John's to look into it. Things such as nerve root injections and phsyical therapy. I've done it all before with no help but maybe now that i've lost so much weight i can get some relief. good luck to you. i feel your pain. literally!

Darleen, Sorry to here this as I know what you are going through. My docter had me on 800mg motrin and that did help but of course since my surgery I cant take that anymore, he has tried several different things but unfortunatly nothing has worked except vicodin. I try to only take it when I cant tolerate the pain anymore, But its hard when the weather is like this. Let me know if you find somthing better. Thank You Claudia

Darleen, I have severe osteoarthritis in all joints but my toes. The surgeon took me off my Mobic (I cried when he did that) BUT he lets me have Arthrotec if I use Prevacid with it. Now, the Arthrotec doesn't take away all the pain but it does make it tolerable. I also take Skelaxin for muscle spasms (2 per day). Last week I had a really bad flare up and my arthritis doctor checked with my WLS surgeon and I could double the Skelaxin and add Tyelonol Arthritis. I can do this only for a week at a time but it really worked. Your surgeon will work with you on meds. Mine told me if things got unbearable, he'd give the Mobic but not until and even then I have to take Prevacid with it. Also, try icing (yes, ice) the joint for about 1/2 hour and then apply some heat (20 minutes). The combination seemed to help my neck and shoulder along with the pain meds. I actually got some sleep at night.
