I am heading for 1st case surgery tomorrow and was wondering if anyone had any tips for me. I have to be there at 5:30 AM. How is the bariatric unit? Private rooms for all? Cell phone use? I am getting nervous and starting to come up with questions. Thanks for any help. Hugs, Sheila

I thought Harper's bariatric unit was great. Rooms are private and they're plenty big enough! You can use your cell phone in the rooms. Someone can stay the night with you if you want them to. The nurses let my husband come and go even after hours. The hallways are plentiful - so lots of walking space. LOL I'd suggest packing a SMALL bag. Forget the jammies and robe - just use the hospital stuff (you don't want to get ICK on your stuff) You definately will want chap stick, slippers, and a hair brush. I doubt you'll feel like doing a lot of reading, so you can leave that home. Make sure you have some comfortable clothes for coming home in. I wore the same outfit to the hospital that I wore home (especially since you have to be there so early). Best of wishes to you!!!!!!!! Laurie

Hi Sheila,, Laurie told you the things that you need to know. Also, the easiest place to enter the hospital at that hour of the morning is through the Hutzel entrance. Your husband can drop you off there and then go to the main deck right in front of the hospital. The first floor of that deck there is an exit to the hospital and you just have to walk a short distance. I also think that Kathy A. said the valet was open at that hour but that would be at the Harper entrance. Same drive just a little further north on the oneway drive. If you want I'll stop up and see you Tuesday. I'm off tomorrow so I can't do it then. Jeanne

Thanks Jeanne! I have several family members here so I will have people by if you are busy. But if not I will take a lap or 2 with you! Thanks, that is very sweet of you to offer. I am off in a few after my shower. Wish me the best. Thanks again. You all are the best. Sheila

Everything Laurie said. I did bring a nice comfortable pair of pajama bottoms. The draw string kind. Just to make sure that my bumm stayed coered. And dont forget your toothbursh and toothpaste. I spent the majority of my time walking. When I was not walking I was falling asleep partly becasue of the pain meds. Other than that Congrats and I will see you on the other side. Dayja

People are no longer able to stay with you overnight. I went in thinking my husband would be able to stay and help me but they said absolutely not. He even argued with them and they said there was nothing they could do that it was the policy. I was so mad I cried!! I needed him there and they wouldn't let him stay. I was also the 1st case and everyone there was great except for one nurse who made a rude comment to me about my weight. I was very nervous when I got there but after you go back they do everything they can to make you comfortable. Besides them not letting my husband stay I was very thrilled with Harper Hospital!! The best of luck to you!!!

Wow.. i just had my surgery a week ago tomorrow.. Harper wasn't bad.. they had the valet open at 5:30 in the morning... The rooms are pretty big... and yes they have changed their policy on the fact nobody can stay with you... i came out of surgery confused and VERY upset to the point of hypervenelation and tears when this nurse named Madonna tried to yell at me and tell me otherwise after my mom had called admitance to check on this fact and was given the "okay".. she was VERY rude to me. Other than that the expierence was fine.... Dr wood was very nice, as was his nurse practictioner... and a little blonde nurse with glasses i liked very much although i cant remember her name and the mightnight nurse was great. God bless and good luck!!!

I remember Madonna! Yikes! On my profile page, I have pictures of my room. I took them with my camera phone, so they aren't the best. I had a HUGE room! Also, I didn't want for anything. I really didn't have to take anything other than my chapstick and a huggie pillow for the ride home. Robin
