Can somebody recommend a good PCP? *frustration*
Today I had my annual physical, and I was really not happy with the outcome, for the following reasons:
1) The doctor seemed to have NO knowledge of my history. She hadn't even reviewed my chart!
2) I had to actually ASK to have my blood tested, since it was skipped last year. Again, problem stemming from her not reading my file.
3) She didn't appear to write anything that I was telling her in my file. Right now the only thing barring me from WLS is the lack of documented/prolonged co-morbidities and the lack of a physician-monitored weight loss program in my file. My file is EVERYTHING when it comes to the insurance company. And if she's not documenting potential co-morbidities, then I won't have the proof I need. (For example, she offered me a sleep apnea machine on the spot today. But she wrote down NOTHING. I suggested a proper sleep test to make sure that the machine would be necessary, and she says "we'll see in a couple of weeks." In the meantime she told me to sew tennis balls to my pajamas so that I'll sleep on my side!) She didn't even have my file nearby at that time.
4) I felt like I was being rushed. I told her about all of the symptoms that I had been experiencing, and her primary response was, "It's nothing losing weight won't help." Well DUH! My problem is that losing weight on my own just isn't cutting it anymore! I've exhausted weigh****chers twice, tried several types of supplements, and pretty much every fad diet and exercise program out there. I've always lost weight, but then gained it back with extra pounds attached. I'm sick of it, but my doctor just doesn't seem to have the time to help me. What magic words do you have to say in ordered to be offered a referral to a nutritionist, or access to a "real" weight loss medication? I'm 27 years old, I've struggled with obesity all my life, my BMI is 40.6, and I'm developing real weight-related medical problems! Why won't they help?
*sigh* If anyone knows of a good (and attentive) PCP in the Farmington Hills, West Bloomfield, or Royal Oak area, the info would be very much appreciated.
Now for something positive, to attempt to make amends for the negative post:
Your stories of success are really inspiring. Everybody's so supportive and helpful, and it's helped to reinforce my determination to change my life, even if it means that I have to be the one to make sure that I don't fall through the cracks of an overworked doctor's office. Thank you all so much!
Hi Erynn,
Mine is out of your way too, but worth looking in to.
I see Dr. Jamie Weinstein at the U of M Domino's Farm Family Practice in Ann Arbor.
She is great. As a matter of fact, she is the one that suggested I look in to WLS in the first place. She has told me from our first visit that I know best about how I'm feelng and if I think something is wrong. She has never ever questioned me about any of my symptoms.
She wrote such a great letter to BCBS about me and my knowledge of WLS and all of the attempts I had made with and without her supervision.
If you're willing to drive a ways, I'd give the office a call 734-647-5680....plus, where else can you go for your PCP appointment and see the buffalo roaming about?
My WL surgeon's office is at Domino's as well, and I highly recommend them, too.
Good Luck,
Brenda
Hi there.... my PCP who totally rocks has taken a couple years off to have kids! CAN YOU BELIEVE HER GALL!!!
Anyway, I do have another great doc who is based in the Beaumont Medical Center on Coolige Highway in Troy. Her name is Kerstyn Zalesin - and she is AWESOME!!!
The phone number there is 248-655-5910. They'll have you talk to Karen Andrews, her nurse, and she will spend as much or as little time with you as you need!
I'm not sure if that's too far out of your way... but she's and her staff are absolutely fabulous!!!
Good luck
Hugs

How about 7 Mile and Merriman in Livonia? Dr Janice Summers 248 474 4900
She is in the office Tues and Thursdays. Very supportive, knowledgable, has wls patients who are as much as 10 years out and doing well. Is good on nutrition, positive about wls, and very caring. Also, usually easy to get an appointment. I heartily recommend her!
