WLS...a case doomed for failure??
I had my WLS about 3 months ago. I am happy with where I am and how I am loosing. I feel great! A good friend of mine has been following my surgery and progress. Main reason why is her brother-in-law was trying to get approved for WLS. Well, the approval came and his surgery was a few weeks ago. Yesterday I ran into my friend and her sister. Her sister is about at wits end! From what I got out of the conversation he (the husband) told her that he only needs 40 grams of protein a day. He is basically living on water and sugar free KoolAid. He refuses to 'try' things (like scrambled eggs, cottage cheese). He will get Pintos & Beans from Taco Bell and eat half and then wait 15 minutes and eat the other half. Justification that he 'ate for 30 minutes' is what she said. She said he is basically following his own rules and it's driving her nuts!!! I told her that I was told I needed to get in atleast 70 grams of protein a day, if not more. My hair is starting to come out, not alot but it is starting to come out and I am trying to take in even more protein now to reduce more hair loss. He tells her that there is no way he is going to loose his hair. I felt bad for her, as she seems completely stressed out over his whole outlook. Granted, she said he has dropped alot so far and that is what is keeping him going, but he is not following his protein, not taking in enough calories, not concentrating on changing his eating habits (he owns his own business and she said he was on the phone with clients the day after surgery - while in the hospital! - instead of concentrating on what his WLS recovery). He will drink an energy drink for the whole day and state the it will be enough for his protein intake (which he claims since it is 50 grams it is more than the 40 that he needs). I had previously told my friend that I will occassionally take an Isopure Zero Carb with me while I am out on the road. The sister bought some, but he refuses to even try them. He says it makes him thirsty. Umm...hello??? DRINK SOME WATER LIKE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO!!! I told her eventually he will hit a stall and he needs to expect that. She said he claims he won't hit a stall.
From what I was told by my friend is this: prior to surgery he would consume almost a 2 liter of pop during a meal, is a big carb (bread and pasta eater), junk food junkie...and she thinks that he feels he will be able to eat that stuff later down the road. I told her that sure he might, but he won't keep the weight off.
Anyways, the sister is hoping he gets sick on something and maybe he will follow 'drs rules' versus 'his rules'.
How do people like this get through the psych evaluation??? There are so many others who want this surgery and can't get approval from their insurance and then there are those that do get approval and just don't try.... I just don't get it.

Many of us, like other kinds of addicts, can talk a really good game to impress a psychiatrist for an hour. And, this surgery is a money-making proposition for the medical industry.
Did his doctor give detailed, written, dietary and nutritional instructions? Did he give explanations of what happens when nutritional goals are not met? Did the doc explain that compliance is an indicator of long-term success? Was he told that when the honeymoon phase is over, the crap food will stop the weight loss and that this is the time to change the habits?
If all that was done, then she will have to choose to either nag or let him continue to risk his health, just in a different way than before the surgery. Maybe failing energy levels will cause him to rethink his stand or help him out of denial. It's early days yet,.
What a tough place for the wife!
Michelle,
I agree with you on this one... someone needs a real wake up call. He is going to end up doing more harm than good, at least from what I know of it. I am not on that side of the surgery yet, but I know I have to change every aspect of my life, especially the types of food I eat, the times I eat and the amount I eat. How can someone think that they don't need to change the way they do things. What got us all where we need this surgery in the first place. I am sorry for ranting, but this really bugs me, when someone does things like this. Not only are they harming themselved, but they increase the complication stats (only by not following directions). I will get off my soapbox now. Just really bothered by this.

HI Michelle,
WOW what an interesting posting. I can't imagine going as far as I have to just blow it on anything. Maybe he jumped into the surgery, and didnt' have to work at it like most of us do. He sounds like he isn't going by his Dr.s requests, but by his own wants and needs. I think this is enough to give you the extra encouragment to keep on track and focus ahead on what is right with the surgery. Definately not a 2 liter of pop...HOLY MOLY....I have never done that. Lets just hope and pray he dont' become a failure down the road. Keep giving his wife the support it sounds like she needs, and you show them what you can do. You go girl...
Hugs...

He'll fit better in his coffin.
People don't understand that we walk a fine line between life and death because of malabsorption and malnutrition.
Eat all day long in small amounts, Take your vites, drink water and exercise = live a long life.
Eat wrong, don't drink water, forget your vites, lay around and atrophy = worm food.
Don't get yourself in a knot. You'r still recovering and don't need the stress.

Wow Michelle....like posted ...interesting. Very interesting.
Though I agree with KP's post entirely....I believe that this guy needs a RUDE AWAKENING and soon. Or else.
Sad to say how often people don't listen or follow the guidelines set by their medical professionals, and what gets me is that I still get sick when I eat one bite too much.
How someone would want this surgery then not follow the rules is amazing. Sad and amazing.
Perhaps she should call her husbands doctor and rat on him.
I dont know about this one. Tough call.
