WalMart is doing away with lay away

I'm with Stacy on this one. If you've read some of my other posts, you'll see why I think it's horrible to give Wal Mart your money. Kmart usually has a special for their lay away in Oct. or Nov., to encourage people to shop before Christmas. If you have to pay $3.00 at Meijer's , it will be worth it to have the stuff you want closer to the Holidays. Maybe while you're at the other stores, you'll realize you can live without Wal Mart! Good Luck, Brenda

You should not feel "guilty" for shopping there, but you should be aware that in order to give you cheap diapers, workers in this and other countries must suffer horrible injustices. Wal Mart has had more disability discrimination suits against them than any other employer in the country. As a consumer, you could pay the fee at Costco to get cheaper staples for your family. Clip coupons, join a co-op. Or at least admit that Wal Mart is a huge corportaion that is accused of some kind of abuse every day. They "rough up" the companies that sell to them, often making manufacturers lay off workers just to give that "always low price". If you owned a small business, and Wal Mart was responsible for your family livelihood to coming to an end, that $15 a week you save wouldn't seem like such a big deal. Shop where you will.....but be aware of what you're doing...and who you are giving your money to.

Hi Laurie, I was bummed also. I usually lay away there every Xmas also. The clerk told me almost all stores, Meijer, Kmart, etc are going to be getting rid of layaway. Kmart charges $5.00 for every layaway. I wish my town would get a Super Walmart so I could grocery shop there. The prices are our grocery stores here are killing me. Next weekend I'm going to Alpena and I will pick up a few things when I'm there. Just for instance I buy Spartan sweet and hot mustard at our grocery store for $2.19, the Walmart brand is .96. It tastes exactly the same. I feel bad if people are being overworked, underpaid, etc but I need to help my family survive. Lynn

Lynn, Have you thought of traveling to Cadillac to the new Super Walmart? Depending on where you are in at in TC it might not be far. Michelle

Laurie, An article I read stated this would the last holiday season for layaway. So this year you should be fine. If your local Walmart says no, then fight them on it for this year. If the website says 'this is the last holiday season' then that is what it should be. Guess I better get into my local Walmart and get that power Gravedigger for our son for Christmas in the layaway department rather soon! As far as next year?????? Do you have a Christmas Club account? Might help ease the burden of waiting to do all the shopping the second week of December. Just a thought. Michelle

I called our local WalMart and the last day to put something in lay away is Nov. 8th (that's not problem for me) but the last day to get it out is December 9th - that's the problem. My dh doesn't get his bonus chec****il the week after that so we can't lay away. Yes, I will be making other arrangements for next year but it's very frustrating to me to have them drop this right before Christmas. The least they could have done is keep the lay away open until the week before Christmas or something so those of us who were counting on it could still use it.
