a lil' freaked out
Tamara a lot of ppl are uneducated about this surgery. Read profiles and research as much as possible. This surgery is very life changing, and not something to take lightly. If you are really ready, you'll do it no matter what ppl think. This is to make you healthy and happy , not them. Have you done any seminars?
Hugs
Linda
Hey Tamara,
Please don't listen to the people that have just negitive things to say. Yes bad things can happen but not as often as some people may want you to believe. This surgery is designed to help people that are morbidly obese not to hurt them. I had my surgery 10 months ago. I've lost 138# since surgery and 67 before surgery, for a total of 205 pounds lost. This has changed my entire life! All of it for the better. I can do things now that I could only dream of doing before. I used to be a depressed, miserable person that just wanted for life to end. Now I live life! I run, jump, and play. I go places and do fun stuff. I'm not afraid to go out by myself. I like to meet people now. Life is good. I don't ever want for it to end. I have achieved more in the last 10 months than I have in my entire lifetime. If you have this surgery it will change your life to. You are in controll of what you choose to do. You can choose not to have the surgery and stay the way you are, or you can choose to have the surgery, lose weight, get healthier, and enjoy life to the fullest. The choice is yours. Please don't let uneducated (about the surgey) people get you upset about having this done. This surgery saved my life. I will always be thankful to God and my surgeon for saving my very life, and letting me live a truely amazing life post-op. I hope this helps you.
May God bless you always,
Annette
if you respect them you owe it to yourself to hear their reasoning and do the research to find out whether or not YOU agree with them. The surgery is for you, it's your decision but it can't hurt to listen to all sides, read as much as possible and make an informed decision. I went into it knowing exactly what i wanted, exactly what the risks were and exactly what my options were. I was ready. There was no backing out. Fear yes, hesitation no.
Be careful in your research, don't rely only on other patients, heresay and media spokespeople. there are risks involved, you have to be ready for them and certain that you're at the point where you're willing to take those risks. for most of us the risk was in staying obese as we had failed in every other attempt to take control of our health and the risk of surgery was also the opportunity for life. for some it's a quicky easy attempt to mask a deeper problem.
try to remember, doubt and fear are natural. it's a serious operation. it's healthy to have doubts and fear over risking your life. it doesn't mean it's the wrong thing to do.
part of your process will be education and pyschological evaluation. it's not just there to screen people out, it can be a tool for you to use as well.
whatever you decide it will be your decision and it will be the right one. for you. good luck.
I have been in the same place you are right now. I researched this surgery for 4 years and had everyone in my family tell me not to do it. I had people saying "You could die"....I could die if I didn't have the surgery too. I had people saying "You could gain it back"....I'm gaining weight now, at least with surgery I would have a fighting chance. I finally had to stop listening to them and listen to what my heart and my head said. I had my surgery August 28th and it was the best thing I have ever done. I haven't had to take blood pressure meds since surgery. I will not lie....this was the hardest thing I have ever done. I completely underestimated the pain but once I got it managed I was ok. I went back to work 2 weeks after surgery and things are going great.
Best of Luck.
Stacey
Tamara.
This is something you have to do for yourself, if you want to do this, trust yourself, you have one of the best surgeons. Dr Schram did my surgery in June, and all went great. People that do not have a weight problem, have no clue what we go through and cant imagine that we would go through something like this " just to lose weight". Well, when you start having severe health problems that can kill you, you have to rethink what you are going to do. My husband was very apprehensive, but now he fully understands why I had this surgery. Good luck, teri
Hi Tamara,
Everyone is right. Do your research to find out what you are comfortable with before you do anything. If you are serious and plan on being compliant that is half your battle. My surgery was almost 3 yrs ago and I followed the rules. I can honestly say that I have had no problems. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I wish I would have done it at a younger age.
Good luck to you.
Take care,
Carey
I agree with everything Jay said.
Yes, you need to listen to the concerns of those who love and care about you. But you also have to remember that they might not be educated in the entire process or the modern advancements of the surgery. WLS has change a lot in the past 5 to 10 years so the old horror stories don't really hold true any more.
Also do a TON of research and reading. Yes, the member profiles here are great as well as the advice from these forums, but should not be your only source of information. Check out books written by medical experts and ask your surgeon's office if they have recommended reading. One book that was recommended by my surgeon is "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" - it's a very comprehensive book that covers every question I never knew I had.
The key to making the right decision is to make sure you are fully educated. Also that you are doing a lot of soul searching to determine that you're doing this for YOU and not for someone else or for the wrong reasons. Sometimes keeping a journal with your thoughts can help with this process.
Good luck!
Pam
