I just talked to my mother and she said one of her friends told her that her doctor said the rate on gastric bypass surgery and gaining your weight back is 90% that you will. I find this very hard to belive and dont belive it....Anyone else know any statistics?

I personally think that you can make "statistics" say whatever you want them to say!!! I don't believe them for one second!!! Laurie

First, I don't think I could gain 155 lbs back in a million years. I don't have room. Second, all rates may differ according to different surgeons. But I did a www.webmd.com search : http://www.webmd.com/content/chat_transcripts/2/110166.htm Check it out, it may shed some insight for you. Also, If it's hearsay, it may be misinterpreted, meaning, your Mom heard it from her friends who heard it from her doctor.....is this man a BARIATRIC SPECIALIST? Does he/she support Bariatric Surgery? Doesn't sound like it. Keep searching for stats, they are out there. And proof is on this site. Look at how many of us are SUCCESS Stories right in your own neighborhood!!!! Stacey

I think your best source of accurate information about this would be your own physician. Bariatric specialists know all about these things, and I'm sure you will feel much better after discussing your concerns with a professional in the field. Bonnie

It's more like 100% regain of your weight and then some if you don't follow the rules. Everyday you have to take inventory and make an honest effort at curbing years of bad habits/genetics/poor choices. If you don't then you gain. If you do what you are supposed to do then you will have success but the surgery is just a vehicle to better eating/health habits. It's what you make of it. The stories are true - stopping on the way home from surgery for a burger. Eating a PBJ sandwich one week out. Burrito Grande two months out,,,, it's all been done and discussed right here. So,,,, no advice for you on this one except the stats were wrong. I fight it everyday. I make an effort to stay smaller every minute. I have my pals who keep me honest and I have my not-so-pals that keep me honest too. When you have success it is because you did. When you have failure it is because you didn't. Make you priority your health and you will make it with good support. "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics." Benjamin Disreali? kp

That sounds more like the stats for losing weight with conventional diets. People "may" be able to do it, but keeping it off is rare.

Listen to KP. He is a total guru on the subject! My opinion is this, Nothing is a cure all for obesity. But so far this is the only way I found to not still be 400 lbs and sick every day of my life. I will NEVER gain my weight back and that is because I remember! It is not easy and I have issues, but I did before surgery or I would not have been 400 lbs. No matter how you lose weight, if you do not eat right and excersize you will gain back some or all. But it is harder after surgery to gain it back and easier to give up some foods that are a trigger. I cannot eat fast food anymore and can only tolerate small amounts of sugar. It would be VERY hard for me to gain back 186 lbs. Wendy
