Hi there I am having surgery on 10/10/2006 with Dr Foote in GRand Rapids. I just started a diet a few days ago where MMPC provides the food. The food is gross. Does anyone have any tips? Can I substitute anything? Thanks, Kelly

When I was on my preop diet we could use spices and seasonings to flavor the food. I know that it is gross but it is an important part to the surgery you are trying to shrink your liver so you can have it lap instead of open. It is mind over matter and you can do it just think about all the positives that will happen after the surgery. Good luck Tricia

Tricia - Thanks for the info. I am having such a hard time with this food. It is so gross. I can tolerate the soup and oatmeal but Iam getting tired of them. I wish they had more variety. Thanks again, Kelly. Good Luck to you.

Don't know what you're eating but I thought the chili was OK ... I used to add some cheese to it; in fact, I still eat the chili sometimes. The spaghetti is not bad if you add some garlic and Italian seasonings and parmesan cheese. With the shakes, add some sugar free syrups to it and you can make some pretty good shakes. The bars (caramel nut and coconut almond were my favorites) weren't bad. If you mix the chicken noodle and cream of chicken soups together, they're not too bad. Stick with it ... this stuff prepares your body for the surgery. It gets you in the best shape possible so you can better tolerate what they're going to do to you. It's only for two weeks. Good luck Eileen

Thanks Eileen! Sounds like I am eating the same things you did. I have not tried the chili yet. I tried the speghetti and I could not eat any of it. No way. Im not a picky person either. Its wierd. Thanks for the tips. Wish me luck. I want this to go by fast.

I thought the bars were the *******so really liked the ready to drink. I didn't mind the chili and the spaghetti was ok. Because they only had cream of chicken soup, I was so sick of that stuff by the end of the 4 weeks, I don't ever want to look at any more cream of chicken soup ever again. My advice is just to keep in mind that this isn't for very long and the ends really do justify the means.

Hi Kelly, OH WOW...reading your post brings back memories. I know exactly where you are coming from. What things did you get to eat?? I ate alot of the chicken noodle soup, bars, jello and hot chocolate. It gets old fast, but stick to it, it will be over before you know it. By the way...Dr. Foote is awesome isn't he?? He did my surgery on Aug. 16, I really like him. I wish you the best of luck on your food, please let me know what you are eating. Did you contact either of the Dietitians, maybe they can help broaden your food choices. They both have e-mail to contact them...it might be worth the try. Best of Luck. ***HUGS*** Cheryl

I actually learned to LIKE the spaghetti, but I found that I really had to cook it thoroughly. I also added basil and garlic spices. The caramel nut bars were actually pretty good and the coconut bar was good too. The hot chocolate, mixed VERY thoroughly with boiling water, is still my "protein drink of choice". The warmth settles and sooths my tender little pouch, especially in the morning. I mix it with some instant decaf coffee in the morning and it's nice. I could not tolerate the shakes at all. I tried mixing them with flavorings, ice, etc., but I just could not gag them down. Gives me the chills just thinking about them!! We are actually pretty lucky. When my good friend had her surgery (several years ago) at MMPC, they ONLY had the shakes. My poor sainted friend lived on those miserable things for 2 weeks prior to surgery and 2 weeks after surgery. She was quite jealous when she found out that I could eat "pretend" spaghetti, chili, hot chocolate, and protein bars!! Good luck - and I know that it's tough going on that glop. Get creative and you'll survive the pre-op and the 2 week post-op stringent diet. It's all for your own good, even though it doesn't taste like it at the time! Bonnie

Hi Kelly, I was @ MMPC today for orientation and to pick up my preop diet food........ Got to admit I'm not looking forward to this stuff as I had been prewarned it was rather nasty tasting stuff..... I picked up the Chili, spaghetti, Cappuccino, hot chocolate, vanilla & chocolate pudding/ drink, chicken noodle soup, chicken bullion soup, oatmeal, cocnut & caramel bar, garlic & Onion soy nuts. Anyone else tried any of the one's that have not already been discussed? Connie
