THIS IS GOING TO SOUND STUPID!
I need help with eating. I am 4 weeks out today and starting "The rest of my life" stage of this diet and I don't know what to eat. I was so mad and frustrated yesterday I just wanted to cry. I know I can eat pretty much what I want within reason and portion but I am looking for the types of things you may have eaten at this point. (I can't so shellfish-I am allergic. I overdid it on the Salmon and Tuna. I can't do eggs at all.) I can do chicken..I made chicken parmesan last week and it went really well. I'm so afraid of gaining weight. I also don't want to throw up. Yesterday I was such a wreck I barely ate anything at all worrying about all this. At this point I am going to be living on cheese, lunch meat and crackers for the rest of my life if I don't come up with something. (I also have a 7 year old son to cook for so I need things that he could eat also.) Things were so much easier when they mapped out what to eat every week for me. I NEED A SUPPORT MEETING BAD!!
Stacey,
You just have to think of the things you enjoys eating and think of ways to have it sugar free or fat free. I had a hard time w/ eggs but for some reason I was able to eat them boiled. How about cottage cheese. Do you like oatmeal? Chili has a lot of protein. You will not gain. You can't even eat that much. I did very well with salad. There are all kinds of things you can put in your salad. I still have 2 - 3 protein shakes a day. It will come to you. Also, take your time. Eat very, very slow. Small bites. Chew. You should be fine.
Take care,
Carey
Thank you for your reply. I have been doing cottage cheese since week 2 and oatmeal made me throw up last week for some reason. I had eaten it before but now I am afraid of it. I had chili but the beans made me too gassy and my stomach was a wreck. I can't eat lettuce. I couldn't eat lettuce before surgery and I'm not sure if I can now either. It used to make me violently ill and I'm too scared to try it now. See why I am having such a problem. I'm confused!

If there isn't a group at St Marys this month, let's have our own. Send a email and we can get together.
I remember the feeling that last week or two before I was offered the whole world on a plate and I still know that eggs are evil. Meijers has some healthier peanut butter. Trader Joe's has soy butter as well. a spoon or two of these will keep the pouch full for awhile. Refried beans from a can or from Taco Bell were pretty good, and the gas will get better as your system gets used to the new life. I used Campbell's Cheese soup, found it at Farmer Jack, and put canned chicken chunks in it. Split Pea soup, again from TJs, sometimes with some chopped up ham. Can you tell that I'm not a chef? Nobody says you have to graduate to the scary stage, we can always go backward to gentler foods.
If you call the office I'm sure Paula will have some suggestions, remember that she's been there too.
You can e-mail me at [email protected]'s my e mail at work. I'm not hooked up at home yet. We moved the week before surgery and I am just now getting around to finishing unpacking.
Hi Stacy,
As I said before, I'm in your area, so if you and Jane want to get together, let me know. We can even go grocery shopping together! I have 11 and 14 year old boys, and all they want to eat is pizza, so I know how hard it can be to cook for everyone.
You can get low carb bread....but I don't bother because I only eat 1/2 slice anyway.
Meatballs in tomato sauce are good.......you could make pasta for your son and just eat yours without. I have a hard time with a lot of proteins, but I seem to do ok with pork chops and lean pork roast. Here's another favorite of mine, if you like to cook a little bit. Get some turkey lunchmeat thick sliced at the deli. Then in a pan melt 2 T smart balance or other butter substitute, whisk in 2 T whole wheat flour until it makes a paste. Whisk in 2 cups low sodium chicken broth and some poultry seasoning. Let it bubble for a minute and then add the turkey and let it heat through. You can serve your son's like a hot turkey sandwich, or with some mashed taters. It tastes like the old Stouffers in the red box my mom used to give us when we were kids.
As KP said, mexican type dishes made with just beans is a good idea too, and use some Beano before.
Also, I make protein pancakes (look online for recipes) and a tiny bit of sugar free syrup.
I still haven't figured it all out, but I hope this helps.

Hi,
This does not sound stupid. I am 3 years post-op and this is what at ate in the beginning and what I eat now. Hope it helps:
cottage cheese and fruit, oatmeal, cheese and whole grain crackers, tuna, chicken and egg salad. Tons of chili....I either make it or buy it at Wendys. Stir fry made with shrimp and veggies. I have troubles with bread, pasta and rice so I stay away. Lots of egg white ( you said u couldn't do eggs). Soups and yougurts. I do drink a protein shake every morning.
It all trial and error...something u like before u had surgery u will hate now. It will take time and u will do great.
Best of luck,
Robin
