My next question really really worries me. I love coffee. I drink 2 cups in the a.m. and thats it. I have been told that I have to give it up because it can hurt my new stomach. Can I ever return to it and what about decaf? Can I at least have that rigfht after surgery?

I asked this question too. I'm pre-op and haven't gotten my official diet plans yet, but was assured that I'd be allowed to have decaf coffee after the surgery. The thing to remember though is that coffee is a diuertic so it is countering what you're doing with your water intake and you should keep the coffee to an absolute minimum. So I'm practicing now. I've slowly been cutting back on my coffee --- which has always been a 24oz take out cup on the drive to work (with cream and sugar). I'm down to 16oz in the morning (with cream and equal or splenda), then follow up with a bottle of water mid-morning. Hope that helps, Pam

caffeine is a diuretic. now figure out if one ounce of coffee causes you to expel more than one ounce of fluid. if not it's a net gain of water not loss. (better minds than mine have argued this and i've yet to see a definitive answer, just a lot of doctors on either side of the fence) BUT what i do know, is that the acid in the coffee is bad for our pouches regardless of whether or not it's a diuretic. i've also been told it affects our absorbtion of calcium but i'm not sure i understood that concept.
