Filter was very painful...

I had the Greenfield Filter put in yesterday and it was a nightmare. I had to arrive at Harper at 6 AM for my surgery at 8 AM. Well they had some authorization problems so I didn't even get called back for prep until 9:30 AM. Since my surgeon was behind I was rushed through everything and I got to see my husband for one minute before they rushed me back to the operating room for what I expected to be a simple procedure. Well the local anestesia didn't help one bit and I felt everything as the surgeon poked and probed with tubes inside my neck and chest for what seemed 20 minutes. It hurt so bad I was crying and I couldn't catch my breath. All they kept doing was peeking under the stuff they had covering my face and saying you should be feeling a little pressure and kept telling me I had to breath. I even heard them say that the filter was in my heart. So he told them to prep my groin area. I was in shock from all the pain and there was nothing I could do. The surgeon then said I should feel a little poke as he started numbing my groin area and he managed to put it in there pretty quickly without a problem. When I got wheeled into recovery the pain in my neck was horrible and it was very swollen, there was alot of blood on my pillow and in my hair. And there was a hole in my upper chest that was slowly but continously leaking out blood. Anyways nothing was ever explained to me after I asked me people what happened and what the hole in my chest was about. I got out of there as quick as I could and tried recovering at home. My groin felt a little sore but my neck is horrible. And that pain was joined by a horrible pain in my lower right side o fmy back that is aching so bad right now that I have to keep stopping to stand up. All in all I think that this all would have been avoided if my surgeon was so behind schedule and if I would have been numbed sufficiently. It was a nightmare and Iwouldn't do it again. It just sucks I have to be in this much pain before my surgery in less than a week. Also by the way I have a very high threshold for pain. So I know what really hurts and what doesn't.

I was a very surprised because I went in thinking it would be a piece of cake like everyone said. I would have rather went in knowing it was going to hurt very bad. I wasn't prepared at all. Of course as you say I know it isn't common what we went through but I do want others to know it is a possibility.

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry you had to go through that! When I had mine I felt them threading or pushing the tubing and I did get a sharp pain in my heart for a split second and then they pulled back and went at it again and I did not feel it again. My neck was swollen pretty bad and it was sore but my surgery was nothing like what you are describing! I feel so bad for you! I am sure your WLS will be a breeze compared to that! Good luck!!!!! WTF?!?!?!? That is insane!! I've never heard of anyone having a problem like that. Jeez I hope you get to feeling better soon. Rest and take it easy and recover. Give me a hollar this weekend. I'm off the whole time. Take care and positive vibes. kp
