Protein ?'s

Good morning everyone! I had my surgery on 8/22 and was released from hospital on 8/23. No problems, no drainage tubes. Only problem was after they gave me the 'happy' juice I confessed to eating a couple small olives the day before. But I DID tell them I chewed them up real small so hopefully they wouldn't be able to detect them in my bowels! Dr Foote was amazing and the staff at Blodgett was great! I have a couple questions....is it normal for the protein supplements to all of a sudden taste sour?? THey didn't before the surgery. Now it's difficult to sip them because of the sourness. Also they leave a metallic after taste in my mouth now. Any way to get around the after taste other than using mouthwash? Thanks for any hints/tips you can provide. Jan

One common thing among us WLS patients: Our taste buds change DRAMATICALLY after surgery. No one can really say for sure why. It happens. Things before surgery tasted fine, now they are sweet and salty. Also when you start getting a metallic taste? That's ketosis...meaning your body is burning fat. Which is what we want. As far as the tastes, you should try different proteins and see what tastes best to you. I tried all those powder shakes and bluycky. What works for me is Nature's Best Isopure Clear Isolate whey protein in premade glass bottles at GNC- 20 ounces contain 40 grms protein, no sugar no carbs. And the grape is the best so far. But not all people can drink that, or like it. It's trial and error for the most part, and for a long time. Keep trying to find samples of things. One site online that can provide samples: www.unjury.com www.vitalady.com Hope this helps

Stacey....Thank you SO much for the response...I'll take a trip into Cadillac and pick up some Isopure. There's a GNC there and also they sell GNC products at RiteAid in Cadillac. That sounds like just the thing. Re: Ketosis.........thanks for letting me know what that was and that it's a good thing to have happen!!!! Will I forever have this metallic taste or will it stop after a time. Just wondering if I should get Listerine by the gallon! Jan PS I really enjoy your posts and pictures!!! I mostly just lurk around here but wanted you to know how much your humor and good cheer is appreciated!!!

Jan I also found if I scraped my tounge the tastes were better. I don't mean use a tooth brush I mean get a tounge scraper (industrial) from your dentist. Life is so much better now! Kim

Thanks Jan for your kind comment!!!! As far as Ketosis goes and the metallic taste, it comes and goes....according to weight loss I just can't quite be sure when and how often. However closer to goal it seems to cease-- as I have not had it near as much as when I was first post op. I used sugar free cinnamon mints available at Walgreens.....those are hot little spicy numbers and they worked and work for me better than listerine...I don't like mouthwash...tastes like medicine and it gags me. Might want to try a travel size bottle before you buy the economy gallon size!!!!!!!!!!!! Lurk more often! hear me? Stacey

Stacey, thanks for the tip on the cinnamon mints. I wasn't sure if I could use them this soon out. I love those things! I made the mistake of picking up some moisturizing mouthwash because my mouth is so dry. I wouldn't recommend that stuff. The taste is ok but leaves a very 'oily' feeling in the mouth. Again, thanks for your helpful responses. Jan

I drink the Syntrax Nectars - you can find them at The Vitamin Shoppe. They are made with water and I haven't had any problems with them.
