Battling major depression
I know that I am not suppose to ask for medical advice but I am in the process of going throught some major depression issues and I think I need to go back on medication and was wondering what medication does not cause any weight gain or loss of energy. You would think that I would be really happy to have my complications fixed but after my surgery it has caused me more major problems that I can handle anymore. Tricia
tricia,
I'm sorry to hear about your depression issues. I too suffered with depression after my surgery this past year due to my husband leaving and the divorce process. I went to see my doctor and she worked with me on finding just the right form of medication for me. That is the safest way to go hon. Wishing you good mental health and happiness.

Do you see a regular pharmacist? I would look to them and to the doctors you trust for that help. I use http://www.webmd.com/ for information on drugs as well. Remember that you will probably have to cut and paste to get to the site.
I fear depression coming back and I hope never to have to go on the drugs again. But I will if I have too, being thin in that seemingly bottomless pit would be of little comfort.
Best wishes, and keep taking care of yourself, please.
Tricia, my daughter's physician moved her to Flufluxamine because there was less issue with weight gain for this particular med. Your doc will know - I want to say that I've heard the same about Wellbuterin. Maybe some counseling along with it would help. You have to realize that with the weight coming off, hormones are stored in the fat so you'll go through a lot of emotional changes. Also, my understanding is that depression is also due to chemical imbalances in the brain therefore, being thinner wouldn't change those imbalances.
Yes, the blurb about medical advice applies, just sharing with you what I've heard from the medical community.

Hi Tricia,
This is definitely something you want to work through with your doctors and yes, if you have a pharmacist you work with on a regular basis. When I say doctors, I mean both your bariatric Dr. & your PCP. Depending on the source of your depression (i.e. situational, seasonal, chronic, etc.) your PCP may even suggest consulting a Psychiatrist as well. Each of these professionals specialize in their areas and between them all, you will be able to find the best medication or treatment plan for you. You may even want to consider spending time with a therapist to work through some issues and learn some tools for dealing with the depression. I have severe chronic depression, and I work with all of these professionals...when I had my surgery, we were all really hoping I would be able to get along without a couple of my "mental health" meds, but I'm a year out, and having lost weight & being more active hasn't really changed that particular health issue. Thank God it's taken care of all of the others, though!! You've made this huge change in your life, don't let depression keep you from enjoying it
