RNY vs. Lapband
Hi
I'm trying hard to decide between the band and RNY I'm worried that with the lapband I will be tempted to "cheat", but have heard some horror stories with reagrds to malabsorption of vitamins etc. with the RNY. I know that only me and my surgeon can make the decission, but has anyone else got some advice they could share .....please ??
Lisa, I too was going to get the lap band because I didnt want the malabsorption either, and then I heard about the dumping with RNY so I went with the vsg.I had my surgery on 5-30 and have lost 37 lbs so far. I feel greaattttt!!! I can eat most anything but in smaller quantities. Get full very fast. Stomach is only 3oz. Good luck in your choice, and enjoy this new journey in your life!!! Peace, suzy
This always starts a fight. I can't wait to see the fur fly again. You have to make a list and see what fits you. I was going to do lap band then decided LAP RUIN WHY NOT would work better for me. Then I changed to open. Couldn't make up my mind in a Mary Kay factory. Everybody had the best surgery by the best surgeon. That's why I say make a list and check it twice.
Have questions to ask your doctor. If he gives you a piece of paper to read find another doctor. If they haven't the time to take to answer questions the they won't have the time to fix your chitlins your way. Find out how many complications they have had in the past 50 surgeries one each type of surgery. Put all that on your list and look it over. Read profiles of each type of surgery and see what they have had to deal with.
I personally had to lose fast and RNY was they way to do it. I also didn't like the idea of getting fills. My boy Jeff has had VSG and he's doing pretty well with it but it is pretty new.
Mal absorption is an issue but I have mastered it so it doesn't bother me.
Good luck with this one.

I was having the same dilemma as you are last week. I couldn't decide. Then I did what KP suggested. I made a list. I decided that if I was going to go this far to finally lose the weight I wanted to make sure I did something that would help me lose all the weight I want to lose and lose it quickly. The band has many positives, too but I decided for me that the Lap RNY would be the better route.
Do talk to your doctor. My surgeon was very open and honest and told me I may not lose the weight I expect to lose with the band. I was very grateful for his honesty because that is what I needed in order to make an informed decision.
Good luck!
