Taking Protein and gaining weight.
I have not yet had surgery, but I started drinking the 100% whey protein shakes with milk, just so I can get an idea of what it's going to be like. The problem is, ever since I started drinking the protein I have gained 10 pounds. I am still eating good and walking/biking everyday. Any one else have this problem, what should I do?
Are you drinking the protein shakes instead of eating meals or in addition to eating meals? You should not be gaining weight if you drink a shake instead of eating a meal. What type are you using? The type I drink daily for breakfast is less than 200 cal. a shake when mixed with milk with 30 g of protein. I've tried mixing with water but it is too gross and I need the calcium. Best wishes.
I don't have much experience in this field, I have however just started doing what you are doing today. The question I have for you though is what are the carbs? Does the brand you are using have a lot of sugar. I made sure to buy something with only 1 gram of sugar or sugar free. That could be where the problem is, if you are replacing the meal with the shake and not in addition to the meal.
I hope it starts to work for you. Good Luck!

Thanks for all of the replies. I have been drinking this for about 3 months now and am not happy with the results. As I said before, I am pre-op.
I am replacing my meal with the shake, I have been drinking it for breakfast, it's quick and easy first thing in the morning. It is 100% whey protein, I drink it with 2% milk, that's what we have (skim makes me sick). There are 80 calories, 2g fat, 3g Carbs (1g of which is sugar), and 18g of protein. It is 98% lactose free and aspartame free.
My thoughts are since you have 'NOT" had surgery yet, your stomach is the same size, and you could possibly be incorporating too many carbs, calories or other things into your daily diet that may be putting on weight.
I did not take any protein supplements prior to surgery because
1. your taste buds change- what you like now, you will hate later!
2. I became lactose intolerant after surgery and cannot do dairy
3. I never did like protein shakes then and now!
Getting an idea is good, but after WLS your diet needs will change plus your taste buds will change and also, remember ----MUSCLE WEIGHS MORE THAN FAT.......so if you are exercising, you may be gaining muscle mass. The clear and only way to tell is to weigh on a scale that measures your BMI, Fat Mass and Fat % -- otherwise a regular scale doesn't do that.
Also, after WLS-- don't weigh as often. I weigh 1 time per month.
That's all I need to know.
Good luck
