What are the stats
Mousie,
Do you know what my 12 year old daughter would say? CHILLAX! You are worrying too much. You will be fine. You are going to have this surgery and you will be a healthier stronger person. Sorry, I don't know what the percentages are but I had lap surgery and I did what I was told to do and knock on wood, I have had no problems. I am 2 1/2 yrs post op and everything went very well for me.
Best of luck to you - take care,
Carey
Very low. It's been a while since I've seen actual stats, but I want to say back in Oct '05 when I was doing my research before surgery, the national average was less than 3.5-5 percent. What you need to factor in is the health of those who had problems and the experience level of their surgeons. I came to the conclusion that most who didn't survive either had life threatening health problems or some major snafu was made during the surgery. Any surgery is a gamble. One must decide how much they want to improve their current status and whether or not they trust their surgeon.
You are doing the best thing you can do now - in educating yourself on the surgery and what to expect. I spent a lot of time reading whatever I could on the subject, talking with other patients and reading this site.
I see you are in Paw Paw. You would be welcome to come to a support group I attend in Kalamazoo to learn more. This support group is sponsored by a practice out of Grand Rapids (MMPC), but everyone is welcome. There is usually 10 to 15 people who attend the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Gilmore Center for Health Education which is across the street from the Bronson Emergency entrance.
I also understand there is also a support group sponsored by a surgeon from Borgess, however, I do not have any information on when they meet.
Matt
