Grey's Anatomy FEAR for us
Did anyone watch Grey's Anatomy last night??? It was about a woman who had lost 100 pounds very quickly and because of it, lost too much muscle mass and the muscle around her heart thinned. A side of her heart burst. They said it was like what happens to anorexics. Does anyone know if this is true and if we are in danger of this post op???
That was all my husband and I needed to see two days before my surgery lol.
Mousie
Mousie, I think that we are not in the same catagory, because we are eating high amounts of protien and getting our vitamins and exercising. If it were that dangerous, I dont feel that quality surgeons would put people in that situation. Did it say how she lost the weight? Anorexics are getting no nutrition, because they are purging or just not eating. We are not like that. You will do fine. Good luck to you, I am 6 weeks out and feeling great!Teri
First of all, having worked in TV Broadcasting well over 26 years, 99 percent of the programs on TV are FICTIONAL. Depicted as just a form of entertainment.
There is NO medical validity to this program other than they "try" to make it look real as did "ER". However, the cases are simply fictional, the weight loss this woman had was simply portrayal of a good actress. That's all. Nothing more.
In reality, I've lost over 100 lbs, monitored by not only my PCP but my WLS Surgeon.
I am real and have had problems and so have many others.
If you follow the rules, drink your protein, take your vites, and take the guidance from the NUT, surgeon and doctor, you are well monitored and that your life is NOT in jeopardy.
Don't put a television program that falsifies information clearly for entertainment purposes into your head as you prepare to go into surgery.
The last thing I would do is watch a plane crash movie on tv right before I'd fly on a plane to travel......
Hugs and prayers and start thinking positive instead of viewing the negatives.
There is TOO much GOOD and GREAT that can come out of this and you need to put the GOOD AND GREAT THINGS IN FRONT OF YOU RATHER THAN DWELL ON ANYTHING NEGATIVE. ok?
Wishing you great success!
Actually the writer of this series Shonda Rhimes did an interview where she clearly stated that every case that is displayed on the series has actually been a case somewhere in the world. Yes she admitted that they take some extreme cases and use them in the series for pure entertainment but everything has happened at least once.

i don't know if it gets that bad but i've been warned by nutritionists and surgeons that you can't lose as much weight as quickly as i did without losing muscle mass and it's very important that i get enough protein because the heart is a muscle. They didn't tell me it could burst but they told me that i will put my heart at risk if i'm not serious about my protein intake.
My sincere apologies for posting what I did.
I should have chosen my words more cautiously- as not everyone who drinks their protein and follows the rules is ok.
People who do follow the rules may or may not have complications.
Again, I apologize if what I said was wrong and those reading my post disagree.

I didn't see the show. Just remember that while those shows are based on true medical stories, they are still fictional.
I've worked in the Blood Bank of a large hospital for 30+ years and everytime I face surgery I have to take a few deep breaths and remember that the greater percentages of people having surgery have no problems.
Because of what I do I remember the cases with problems more than the cases with no problems. Those are the ones that we see the most of. I think I can count on one hand the number of bariatric surgery patients that have needed my services. Most of the doctors, including Dr. Wood, don't even have blood drawn from a type and crossmatch.
