I have a question. A friend of mine had her WLS in March of last year and she has started smoking again and I heard that you should'nt smoke after surgery and I am worried about her. My question is Why exactly arent you supposed to smoke after? (besides the obvious reasons) What can it do to you? Before I approach her with my concerns I'd like some input on this. I should talk to my surgeon at my appointment also and get his opinion. Thank You stacy

I notice I only smoke after sex or at least the last time I looked I was. It's not good for you. It can kill you. My grandfather died from smoking. He was walking across the street to buy some pipe tobacco and a car hit him when he was 84 years old. True story. But seriously, your friend shouldn't smoke for the obvious reasons. kp

My Dad died in February 2006 of esophageal cancer from smoking 4 packs a day back in the days when he was a detective in the Detroit Police Force. I guess crime can kill you. In another view, I read that smoking can delay healing. Which, after WLS, PS, and other surgeries, smoking slows the healing process. If she truly values her life, give it up. Stop smoking now. Besides, it costs alot of money these days and I remember smoking myself and making the decision to have WLS as a chance to live longer, smoking just makes you cough, smell bad, and honestly, it STINKS. Try explaining to her that her life will be cut shorter the more she smokes, and that you would prefer she is here longer. www.phillipmorrisusa.com has plenty of ways to help people stop smoking-- it's where I got my resources and I quit cold turkey. Best wishes with this task in front of you but you can be the friend that helps her stop! Instead of smoking have a conversation with her or go somewhere or take a walk ...be the support she needs to stop! Stacey

My doctor told me that smoking can cause an ulcer in your pouch and that would not only be very painful but could be dangerous. I wouldn't want to take the chance. She needs to talk to her surgeon and see what he says about it.

Thank You everyone I know the obvious reasons and those are most of them but I tried all that already and she says its too hard to quit and I thought I would have more reasons on what it could do to your pouch and stuff but I am persistent and in the last rounds I usually win so here goes round 2 of the saving her life....LOL Thanks again
