I'm scheduled for a consultation on Monday at Barix in Ypsi. I only am interested in the Lap Band procedure and was curious if anyone here had it. I am just at the beginning of all this but I am anxious to get started on the process. Any input would be greatly appreciated! ;-)

I haven't had surgery, yet. I have been approved and am awaiting a date. I was originally interested in the lap band procedure, but after doing some research and speaking with my surgeon about both changed my mind. I would read, read and read some more. There is a ton of information on this website and a lot of great people. You will get a lot of information, but ultimately you have to know what it is that you want and what is the best choice for you. Blessings to you in your journey!!

Can I ask what changed your mind? I know a lot about the gastric bypass, my mom had it done in 2003, I think. I went through most of it with her. My husband is really against the gastric bypass that is why I am checking into the lap band. He has good reasons and after seeing my mom go through so much I agree with him. I'm not saying it's not wonderful, my mom lost 140 pounds and is more alive then I've ever seen her. But for my lifestyle and my job, I just couldn't do the gastric bypass mostly due to the recovery period. I will find out more on Monday and I am very interested to see what they say. I am pretty sure my insurance will cover it. I have been overweight almost my whole entire life and I just can't bear the thought of my daughter growing up heavy because I made it ok for her. I don't blame my mom for my weight but I know that had she not had a weight problem I may not have had one. I admire ANYONE who takes control of their life by either procedure. People think that is the easy way out, but after seeing someone go through it it is by no means easy.

Nicole, I had the lap band in March of 2005. In the first 6 or so months I lost 50 some lbs. Since then I've been able to maintain that loss give or take 5 lbs. Maintaining a weight loss is something I have never been able to do in the past - finally with the band I can. I still have about 40 lbs to go before I reach goal and as of yesterday I've recommitted myself to working toward goal. Weightloss is slower witht the band becase there is no mal-absorption but on the flip side of that you don't have to worry about malnutrition, low vitamin or iron levels nor not getting the affects of any medications you may need to take. With the band there is no limited window of opportunity, it is alway there to work for you and can be adjusted as needed. Since you don't have to worry about dumbing you may be tempted to eat sugary, fatty or high carb stuff which also slows the loss down. But you don't have to worry about dumping if you accidently consume something sugary or too high in carbs. While I am envious of the fast weight loss and remarkable changes I see both here and with my RNY friends from the Henry Ford support group I am still happy with my choice and if I had to do it all over again would make the same choice. I agree you need to do as much research as you can before you decide. It is a personal choice you will have to live with the rest of you life. Here is a link to the lap band board on this site. I found it and the people there very helpful. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/LapBand/ If you have any specific questions about the band please don't hesitate to email me directly.
