I am planning ahead.....!! I already have thin hair....and am worried about the hair loss ater surgery that some have talked about. I am still going thru the surgery even if I go bald!!...but in order to help...would it help if I started taking biotin now? and where can I get it? Does it have any side effects with other meds? Any information on hair loss would be greatly appreciated!!

My pcp says start now, I saw her when I was about a month out. I didn't think to ask her any sooner. And I found some very affordable tabs at Target, of all places. Vegitarian formula, 1000 mcg tablets and they're easy to swallow. I believe I paid $1.99 for 100 tablets and the does is one a day. She thinks it would help at any time and didn't see it as aproblem witha any of the other stuff. S, my take would be that it couldn't hurt.

Walmart has biotin by Rexall - 5000mcg for less than $7.00 and that seems to help.

Hi, I had delayed problems with hair thinning at 8 months out. I posted here and Linda Tom gave me the perfect remedy, although everyone is different. I use Finesse shampoos and conditioner- it contains SOY PROTEIN and helps hair from falling out. (and I can honestly say- IT WORKS!) I too use Biotin. 5000mcg at Walgreens runs about 10 bucks, and it's water soluble so whatever your body doesn't use, it gets flushed out. Also, make sure make sure make sure (yes, I said that 3 times) that you monitor your protein intake!!!!!!!!!!!!! get in that 60-70 grams OR MORE per day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is why my hair started to thin out. Lack of protein. God Bless- hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!

I too use the Biotin 5000 from Wal-Mart. I just started to take it about 2 weeks ago and can all ready see the hair loss is slowing down. My hair loss just started about a month ago. Surgery was in November of last year so you never know when or if it may happen. Like you I have thin hair to begin with so I was a tad concerned but figured I'd rather have thin hair to match my thinner body than live the life I was pre-op. Good luck

Thank you all so much for your advice and info!!! I am out the door to get some biotin. And some finesse!!! I have not had surgery yet as I said....so how much protein should someone get on a daily basis pre-op?
