Hubbys surgery looms - foods?
Hi All-
My husbands surgery is coming up really soon (7-27-06), and I don't have anything for him to eat post op yet. We are coming to Michigan from Oregon for surgery, so won't have our meeting with the dietician until a couple of days before surgery. What basics should I have on hand for right after he gets out of the hospital? I will be near a grocery store, so could get things if I need to, and our hotel has a kitchenette, so I could cook.
Any help would be appreciated. Every one I've talked to in person has different ideas of the necessities....
Also not just food, but any personal items that he will really want (but may not realize it now) with him to make it easier on him?
Thanks everyone who can help us out!
Kim
Kim, I'll second drinking protein. That is the best jumpstart you can give your husband once he comes home. The dieticians will guide you as to what kind to buy and probably can give you directions on where to go get it since you are out of town. The most important things for your hubby are lots of love, water, protein and vitamins.
Lots of luck to you both for safe travels and a successful surgery!!

There is a good chance that your husband can't tolerate some of the foods that the doc's office suggests. A lot of people are lactose intolerant after surgery. I wanted nothing but ice cold water for the first two days. I would locate a grocery store nearby, and that way you can grab one yogurt (sugar free) some drinks, like Crystal Light, and broth.
I would suggest some pillows from home, too. I had to sleep propped up in bed, I think I used 6 pillows!
Have some protein drinks on hand, and I think you'll be fine.
Best of Luck to you!
