Questions about a stricture

I am almost 6 weeks out and been having some problems with eating.....first it was the pureeds so i moved back to full liquids and now i cant even do clear fluids. I called my surgeon on Wed and they told me to come on in. I went in on Thur and low and behold i have a stricture. I am scheduled for EGD on Monday at 8:30. But what I am concerned about and dont know if i should call. I am to the point that I cant even drink water without having pain. I take one small sip, i even measured it out to one teaspoon at a time. It feels as if it is sitting in my esophagus with a sharp burning pain .....until i have a hiccup and then i feel the release. So because of this constant pain i havent drank much water today. Can my body go without fluids for 2 more days? Im afraid that I will end up worse and then they wont be able to do the procedure on Mon or that I may end up having to stay in the hospital. To be honest I am scared to death. Didnt have the fear of dying on the table when i had the surgery but i am very scared right now for some reason. Any input or experience with a stricture? Hugs, Stacy

Hi Stacy, I've had a couple of strictures, try not to worry about it. They put you into a twilight sleep, they don't take you out like they did for your W.L.S. They put a tube down your throat then guided by a camera they put a balloon in there and blow it up to open up your stricture. I don't remember much from the first one and nothing about the second one. You may have a bit of a sore throat when it's over with, but nothing unbearable. The best part is you will be able to eat and drink again with no pain. For now you may want to try warm tea. It helps to soothe the pouch, and helped me a lot. Best wishes to you. you will be fine. God bless you, Annette

You'll be ok. Tell them it's almost closed down and you need to go now. They can have it done in the er. Dr. Flake does them all the time. They can call ahead for you at the local hospital and have them do it. Now, try a little trick before. Make some hot green tea and let it cool a little. Sip it very slow. Real slow. See if that relaxes you a little. It might work but then it might not. It worked for me but I wasn't very closed up. I did it right near the start one time and it helped. kp

I agree with Kevin...I would not wait two days. Go to the ER and get it done...you don't want to get dehydrated. I hear it's a breeze to have the procedure so don't worry about that, but I would not wait. Dehydration is NOT fun. Best of luck and keep us posted, okay? Hugs, Theresa
