insurance question/DS/MESSA BC/BS
Well, I went to see the internist and the behavioralist at MMPC yesterday and got the green light from both of them. Behavioralist says that even though I've had lots of issues in my past, I seem to be in a good place with them, but that he would, maybe, but not require, suggest that I get some counseling for food addiction. I am scheduled to see the surgeon Wednesday. The internist felt I only needed blood work and no other tests performed, so that expedites things further. (I'm trying to get the surgery done before the middle of August, so I won't have to take any time off of teaching)
I am still on the fence about whether to get RNY or Duodenal Switch. I went to a support group meeting last night in Pen****er and everybody there had had RNY. A few had had some problems with regain, some had none. My biggest fear is regain and getting a stricture or ulcer. I know that MESSA covers RNY automatically as long as the BMI is over 40. I tried calling them to ask if they covered DS, and this representative gave me NO information, telling me that "all surgeries are subject to review and preapproval." I would hate to go for the DS then find out I'm denied and then have to go through the entire approval process when I could've gotten an RNY in two weeks! Has anybody had any experience with MESSA/DS?
Thanks! Julie
MESSA approved my RNY in a week (I have supercare 1)...but I also know of two people in my school district, both with supercare 1, who have had the DS as well...I am quite certain that the approval process would be the same as for the RNY. Give them a week or two after your request goes in then call them. I am very happy with the RNY, but I know my coworkers are also very happy with their DS!
Hi Amy:
Thanks for your response. I go to see the surgeon on Monday, and hopefully, if he orders no further tests, my case will go to MESSA for approval. Keep your fingers crossed for me! I checked out your profile - MY don't YOU look great! I keep thinking that God willing, this time next year, I'll be wearing a size 8!
