I would love to hear from people who have had open vs lap RNY or better yet anyone who has had the Sapala-Wood micropouch. Thanks everyone!

Welcome Jami! I had the RNY done laproscopically, and it was not bad at all. Sore, but not excrutiating or anything. I lost 125 lbs. initially, have gained some back being out for almost 3 years now, but that's all up to the person. Stick to the plan an you will have no problems. The open is more invasive, therefore more pain, but some feel the Dr. can "see" in there to check other organs, check for leaks, etc. But my Dr. (Dr. Carlin from Henry Ford Hospital) prefers the lap and he is excellent at it. He told me that with the instruments and magnification, he personally feels he can see much better than with the naked eye. So I felt that was best for me, especially since I didn't have alot of time to recover...had to be back to work. As far as the micropouch, there are many on here that have had it and are very successful! I'm sure they will post. Best of luck to you! Theresa

I too, had the lap done at Henry Ford, but with Dr. Genaw. If you have ever had your gall bladder out, it felt like that. I was up and around the afternoon of surgery and was ok in a few days. With lap you have five 'bullet holes" (as I call them) vs. a "zipper" with the open (and that goes from your breast bone to your navel). I made sure to put cocoa butter on the incisions once they healed to flatten them and make them look good. Only you and your doctor can decide what is best for you.
