a question about all those tubes
Hi all:
I've been to my orientation, and I was hoping to get an appointment for my surgeon today, but did not hear from MMPC. Wah!!! I think I'm going to call and lean on them a bit tomorrow.
I was wondering about tubes.....I have this phobia about tubes, I guess from an NG tube I had after having open gallbladder surgery years back. When you have the RNY lap, do you have the drainage tube and NG tube? Also, are you catheterized too? I swear, that is really the only thing about this surgery that is stressing me out! I figure I can handle the postsurgical pain after already having one open surgery and three kids, it's just that evil NG tube feeling like a giant....hocker.....in your throat!
Patient waiting for my turn,
Julie
Julie,
I had open RNY on 6-21 and am 5 days post op... I had an NG tube, but that came out the evening of my surgery because I could not have it in an successfully use my CPAP. (PRAISE GOD for my CPAP!). I also had a Foley Catheter - but that came out on day two after I had my barium leak test. The JP Drain came out on the day I was released to come home. You are so well medicated that you really won't feel the NG tube and the catheter. I did feal the JP Drain, but it wasn't *that bad*.... My nurses did ask me if I wanted anything for pain prior to taking all my tubes and drains out. If you are fearful of pain, make sure you let your nurses/doctors know. They are very kind in regards to giving pain meds.

Julie,
best of luck in your road to surgery. I really think it depends on your surgeon how many tubes you have left that you remember. I had only the jp drain to deal with and that came out the night before I left the hospital. The ng tube was out before I was awake and must be the foley was too because I don't remember either. I did have a CPAP to use so that May be why the ng tube was out. As brandee told you though you might want to ask for a little something for pain prior to the removal of the jp drain. That's a little uncomfortable, at least it was for me.
Good luck and enjoy your ride to the other side.
Huggsssssssssssss,

Julie-
I am 2 years post op from bariatric surgery with Dr. Kemmeter from MMPC. I have had to have 3 subsiquint surgeries and have never had to have any types of ng tubes. I have had to have a drain or 2 but not from my original surgery. Best of Luck. If you can choose your surgeon Dr. Kemmeter is the best.
