almost 5 weeks post op - still have pain
Hi everyone.
Did any of you have a similar experience as me? I'm almost 5 weeks out and I still have really bad, burning, searing pain in my lower left abdomen. My surgery was laparoscopic and I know that the lower left abdomen is where the biggest instruments are used, but jeez, shouldn't I be feeling a little better by now?
My pain was so bad last week that on Thursday it got the better of me. I called the surgeon's office, sobbing, and they sent me to the ER where I spent 6 hours finding out that I do not have a bowel obstruction. They said it was the "pain of healing". I expected pain after surgery but not this much!!! And you know what? My pain relievers (Dilaudid) do NOT help! I'm getting depressed!
This may sound simple and stupid but have you been doing your walking? Walking is some of the best therapy for the pains of "healing which in your case may be gas. Gas pain can be incredible after surgery - way more than before and I mean WAY!! Lap procedure tends to make some pretty nasty gas even as far out as you are. Try stepping up your walking and keep the pain med happening.

You know, maybe there was magic in posting about this but today I woke up and have very little pain!!! YAY!!!! I took a shower and it didn't hurt for the first time in 5 weeks.
Kevin, my problem was that the pain relievers didn't TOUCH this pain, even a doubled-up dose. I gave up on them because they made me sick and dizzy but didn't relieve the pain. And, I never had any problems at all with gas (lucky me!), not even right after surgery. I had been walking up until this pain got so out of control so now I'm kind of behind in the physical activity department. If I feel this good tomorrow, I'm going for a WALK!!!!
