6th day... and counting!
Hi! I'm Jennifer typing this for my husband Camilo who is here with me. We're writing because Camilo had his RNY surgery last Thursday. He's been very upset with the way he has been feeling... mainly HUNGRY! He thought that he wouldn't feel hunger after the surgery, but it has been pretty mu*****essant. I know it doesn't help when he sees me eating. I try to eat quickly and quietly so that he won't see. It has been really rough. He even envies the baby food! (We have a 10 month old.)
Our question is... do you have any recommendations for foods that he can eat that are more "filling" than broth and water during the first week? We're going back to Northpointe tomorrow to ask for some help, too. Did anyone else experience this?
I'm happy to say, though, that last Thursday he weighed in at 260 and he's down to 245 today! Up until yesterday he still weighed 260 because he's retaining so much water and his feet are completely swollen.
Any help you can give us would be appreciated. Thanks!
Jennifer & Camilo
Your best option is to call the surgeon and find out if he can switch to soft mushy foods. Every surgeon has different time frames for different food stages. Follow what they have instructed for you and if your husband thinks it may be time to move on, discuss it with the surgeon. The surgeon will know best.

I agree, contact the surgeon, you don't want to do any damage this soon!!!
It's hard I know. Very hard!
But also eating in front of him might be hard for him to see. As odd as this sounds, perhaps excuse yourself and eat somewhere out of his sight but within talking distance?
And ask the surgeon about cream of wheat with "ANY WHEY" protein in it. I was able to tolerate that 1 week out. And I did. Almost every day.
Ask the surgeon....priority 1 for his health and best possible care.
Don't make a mistake now you/he will regret later!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wish you hugs and hope this helps!

(Jennifer again.) Thanks... we're going to the dietician today and if she can't answer our questions, we'll contact the surgeon first thing tomorrow. We've been having a hard time even getting through to the surgeon's secretaries! It took 3 days to make his follow up appt.
I'd never eat in front of him! I always try to fit it in when he's in the bathroom or elsewhere. I think he's been through enough suffering already.
Today I made him a protein shake and mixed in some cream of wheat and he seemed to like it well enough, but was starving again just an hour and a half later. I wonder how much of it is in his mind, too. Regardless, he's feeling the effects. I hope they can help him today.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. We're going to cross our fingers for some pureed foods or soft, mushy food.
