I am a semi-regular who has received much encouragment from the postings and I know that I saw this topic addressed some time ago, but at that time it was not affecting me. I am now 4 1/2 months post op and feeling quite good most days--alot of energy and down 70 lbs. I know that hair loss has been attributed to rapid weight loss and not enough protein, but I am truly trying to get it my required amount of protein. I've got the protein drinks from GNC (tho not my favorite thing to drink) and I usually start my day with Beaumont Protein shake with added BeneProtein. My question..........are there any topical products I should be looking into??? Any particular shampoos? Please help............Nancy

Nancy the shampoos didn't work for me. My protein intake was good too. But everyone has different views on this subject. My surgeon says it is a side effect from the anesthesia. Anyway what i did was take 5mg of biotin a day and upped my protein. i lost hair for about three months and then it quit. My hair was straight then the part that fell out came back curly. Weird. I'm having a delayed reaction probably due to lack of protein intake. I thought I wa****ting my quota, but obviously, I was not. Shame on me. And I pay the price. So, I have several options I'm working on I can share. First, make sure you get in 60-70 grams protein per day. I have been under some research as to protein bars as opposed to liquid, so I thought for a while, I'm switching to liquid (ugh) but, I bought ISOPURE liquid isolate whey in the bottles from GNC in Apple Melon. 1 20 ounce bottle has 40 grams of protein, I do half in the AM and half in the PM and then eat a protein bar along with any food I may consume. I keep a chart now as to how much I am taking in. Second, I was told FINESSE shampoos and conditioners contain soy protein, and could possibly help prevent hair loss but I am at the early stages. I can only hope. Third, my hair salon OR at Wal-Mart, is a product called VIOXIN (I believe that is the correct spelling). You can call Wal-Mart Salon OR your salon and ask for the shampoo and conditioner KIT that comes in a box according to your hair type. Meaning: colored or not. This stuff runs anywhere from 30-50 dollars per kit, or you can buy the larger bottles but what I've heard, is you need the whole kit and kaboodle. I do not know if this works, as Linda said, it doesn't always work- I don't know I'm still trying to increase protein and see how that works for me. And I also take Biotin, which is available otc (over the counter) at any drug store or pharmacy. I got mine at Walgreens, and it was 4.99 for a bottle of 60 count at 5000 mcg which my pharmacist stated it is water soluble so what we don't use, we flush out. And she knows my medical history so WLS patients (I suppose all) can take this. It is in my multivitam from Optisource @ Walgreens. Hope this helps. I am suffering also, and I am close to 1 year post op, it is just delayed for me, as in April it wasn't as thin. But, I cut it off short and hope for the best as I up my protein and biotin and wash my hair with Finesse. Many hugs and hope this helps you. Stacey W 310/162/July 19, 2005
