I am still in disbelief! This whole process has taken 2 weeks! I had my surgery consultation last Wednesday. I would have found out sooner, but she was away the last 2 days. Now for the nitty and the gritty, my surgery date is the 20! Today, I told my supervisor. I also am filling out FLA/STD paperwork. My problem is I don't feel comfortable telling everyone about the surgery. So how do I handle this? I told my supervisor that I was having abdominal surgery. She wanted to know what type. She was asking to be kind. ::sigh:: Robin

Congratulations on your approval!! I got my approval letter yesterday and will have my surgical consult on Monday. I also received and accepted a job offer today (which came in between all the calls I made for appointments over the next few days). Therefore, I had to give my resignation AND explain that although my last day will be next Friday that I will be off this day, that day and this other day! Whew! When asked why I just said pre-op for surgery. A few asked what kind and I also replied abdominal. One pressed for details (a female) and I simply said 'female things' (sorry to all the males out there). She did not press any further. I did not feel I should have to provide that information when I will not be returning after the surgery. Good luck to you!! Michelle

Hi Robin, congratulations on your approval. Your surgery date will be here before you know it! As for what to tell people, I really don't have any good advice on that as I seemed to have told EVERYONE I have been so excited I couldn't contain it. I will tell you this, there were times that people were not so excited for me. I learned that not everyone will be supportive of it. So I suppose I would say just go with your gut feeling about that! Good luck! Kathy

I feel so strange. Of all things, I am scared of giving up food. How can this be? Food is the enemy. I briefly had a wild thought that I should cancel my date, so I could go to Frankenmuth one last time! I honestly can understand how people go into last dinner syndrome. I have to figure out what to pack and what I need to do before I go and so on...

Wow that is very fast. Just wanted to say mine is the same day. I have told alot of people what I am having and have had alot of support and some say well thats the easy way. I just shake my head and think if only they knew how hard it really is to do this. Anyways good luck and it will be here very soon. Hugs Debbie M

Congrats on your approval! I am sure your supervisor was asking out of concern, but the laws are pretty straightforward. HIPPA says your health condition is your own business and your workplace is not allowed to insist on disclosure of your condition. Your supervisor should really not even be asking. I think all supervisors should undergo some HR training for this reason. Do not feel bad if you do not want to say. Just say it is personal and you would rather not discuss the details at this time. Good luck.

Congrats Robin! How lucky you are to have approval so soon! As for not wanting to tell, that's your choice. But i am not shy in telling ppl i did this, and i dare anyone to say anything negative to me about it! This is my body and i am very proud to have had the chance to have wls, not everyone gets it. Your day is coming up soon, time will fly. Now get out and start walking and take your vitamins to get your body ready and strong for recovery. Hugs Linda
