Barix vs. Cori

I have been doing a lot of research the past few days and the places nearest to me that I am considering contacting are Cori Centers in Warren and Barix Clinics in Ypsilanti. I was wondering if anyone has an input, negative or positive on either or both. I have already registered for a seminar for Barix on June 1st, but I am not sure which place would be best for me. Barix is about half an hour away, while Cori is probably an hour or more. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shawn 289

I suggest you look into St Mary Mercy in Livonia. Real handy to get to, 23 to the Jeffries, maybe 49 minutes from Pinckney. I have been treated royally, Paula, who heads up the program is an insurance wizard and an all-round nice person. She stays on top of all the details, not like some places I have read about. Dr. Zeni was easy to talk to, very clear on what I should expect. His patients and the hospital staff have had nothing but praise for him. When you research him be aware that his numbers have not been updated recently, he has been doing at least three lap rny-s each week There is a dietician on staff, and lots of follow up and follow through, I'm looking forward to being on their losers' bench. The number is 800 686-9940

Thanks Jane! I will definitely check them out and consider them. A lot of my family live in Livonia and Westland and use St. Mary's hospital for many things. It is a very nice hospital. Thanks again. Shawn 289

I chose my surgeon, Dr. Wood and he happens to be a CORI bariatric surgeon. I would have chosen whichever center he participated in. My top consideration was the surgeon first, everything else was secondary.

Thanks for the info. I think I filled out the online form for the seminar on the 24th, but they are supposed to call me to confirm. Thanks again Shawn 289

I was VERY happy with Barix Clinics. The consultation was great, the surgery went good, and the post visits have gone well. The nurses and doctors are great. They treat you with a lot of respect and care. More importantly, they know what they are doing. They make sure that this is right for you and find the proper surgery for you (rny - open or lap, or band). They gave me the "Bariatric Bible" as we call it. It is a binder with nutritional info to keep you on track before and after surgery. I did not have to do anything with my insurance, they did it all. As said earlier, I was very happy with my dealing with Barix Clinics and have referred others, who have been pleased also. Good luck with your journey.

Thanks for the info. I have not met with anyone yet, and have done a small amount of research. Right now I think I am leaning toward Barix for two reasons. #1 I have seen a fair amount of positive feedback about them and #2 because of their location. I will know more I am sure after I go to a few seminars. Thanks again.. Shawn 289

I can only give you info based on my research and I choose Cori. They have been doing WLS for a long time. I did not have a single problem with any phase so far. I liked the dietitcian they have and Dr Kole was excellent as is Dr. Wood. I was treated great at Harper hospital and the staff knew how to care for a bariatric patient, they have there own unit. Many hospitals that have the WLS patients in the general patient mix have staff with inadequate experience dealing with WLS patients and the possible complications. You want to go where they do the surgery everyday not once in a while. This should be a determining factor for any surgery that anyone has. I am an RN in surgery and I see what can happen when you go to a surgeon that only does a procedure now and then. I don't want the guy that just finished hemorrhoids or a breast biopsy coming in to do my RNY. Just some food for thought, no pun intended. I would do research on all that you consider and look at a bigger picture than just the surgical experience. If you don't have people that can recognize issues after surgery you could be putting yourself at a greater risk. Good Luck, Mary

Being a nurse also I agree with Mary. I also chose Dr Wood @ CORI center, I would've opted for whatever center DR Wood was at. Its more about the physician than the center for me. It depends oh waht you're looking for, being a nurse you to see more and know more about whts going on behind the scenes which also helped in my decision! Best Wishes!!
