Probably a stupid question

If one were to follow the post-op diet....liquids at first, then soft, etc., and the small amounts, would they lose the same amount of weight as those who have had the surgery? I'm just wondering. I'm pretty sure I'm having the surgery (need it), and I know people can't eat such small amounts without the surgery (you couldn't keep that kind of diet up), but I was wondering if there's something inherent in the surgery that makes you lose weight. I probably should know this by now, but it's something I was thinking about).

Yes Patty, the surgery is called bypass surgery because Bypassing part of the intestine also results in fewer calories being absorbed. This leads to weight loss. So not only the reduction of food causes weight loss, absorbing less calories is another benefit in weight loss surgery. I hope this answers your question. Take Care, Janice

That is not a stupid question at all. In fact, if I had a dime for everyone who asked me that question when I told them I was thinking of the surgery, I'd be rich!!! Yes, you would lose a great deal of weight following that diet for a few weeks, but the differences are: 1 - You won't be as hungry due to your smaller stomach, so it won't be as difficult 2- Malabsorption is the key to this surgery, your body doesn't absorb all the fat and bad stuff like it did before; it bypasses 3-Once you stopped eating that way for a few weeks, you would gain the weight back without the surgery
