New Food ideas...
Hi everyone!!! Its been a while since I posted. I've had a torn Meniscus in my left knee since December. I finally had that operated on this last Tuesday. So soon I'll feel relief.
Anyways, I'm looking for a new grocery list. Summer foods I can start trying and seeing what works for me. Im not looking for recipes , but a list of healthy foods I can buy that are tolerated by WLS patients. I know we are all different. But maybe with new ideas I can make myself a new menu. I have a hard time with fresh fruits, lettuce & pastas & rice.
I still drink protien, and mostly eat sugar free pudding (for a once in a while snack). I try to eat fat free yogurt everyday. A few days a week I eat instant flavored oatmeal. And beef jerky on occassion. Other than that I eat what is left over from what ever I make my husband for dinner, that I can tolerate. And I dont want to do that anymore. I want custom design my own meals & menu.
Maybe one day I can get my husband to eat healthy.
I see alot of people use flax?? I know nothing about flax seed. Will it help me lose wight? can i put it in my oatmeal?? etc. etc.
Well thanks eveyone!!! and any suggestions are appriciated!!!

Hello,
I checked out your profile to find your surgery date and from your pictures you are doing awesome. I was wondering how far out from surgery you are for some suggestions. I drink a protein drink (slimfast protein with Splenda) every morning, and for lunch I just have a snack such as cheese and crackers or tuna fish and crackers, something light with protein. I eat a salad everynight for dinner and whatever I cook for my family. I just go by eating protein first so I don't eat alot of the potatoe/rice/pasta. If you do the cooking at dinner as I do then you can have the control over serving healthy dinners which is what I do. My husband may go into the kitchen later to eat, but at least I have my healthy leftovers, LOL.
Take Care,
Janice
Thank you Janice,
I wish I could eat seafood, tuna. But I have many food allergies, one of them is seafood. Its so hard to chose food , when so limited.
I had surgery about 20 months ago. I have had other surgeries in between that has set me back as far as excersize & losing. I still need to lose about 50 lbs. and Im having a hard time doing it. Im kind of at a stand still. So I thought if I try something different and more weight losing foods Ill pick back up and get this last 50 lbs off. I wish I could eat raw fruits & vegetables and lettuce , but I cant tolaerate it too well. It seems like there isnt alot of healthy food left that I can eat. I need new things to try. HELP......
P.S. I have to also change my pictures on my profile because I have full body more currant pictures. Some of the ones on my page were taken by a friend in photography and had digital enhancment, lighting ect. done to them., so I'd like to chnage them to regular photos, but I dotn know how. Anyone know how? Thanks ;)
Hi!
It looks like you are doing good. I understand about trying some new things. Right now I can't really think of anything besides what Janice suggested and I totally agree if you are making the food just make it healthier. I do use flax seed. I eat oatmeal almost every day and I always put flax in it. It is suppose to be good for your heart, lower cholesterol. It helps me to be regular as I have IBS- constipation.
How about some protein, fruit smoothies?
Good Luck!
Hi Heart,
There are many "normal food's that I just can't tolerate anymore. I have found a product line called Smart Food's. They are low in calories, fat's and carbs, yet high in potassium, and most have at least 6gr's of protein per serving. I add 1 tablespoon of any whey flavorless protein powder to most of it, that adds 9 more gr's of protein. I usually buy the Tex Mex (kind of like chili), smart dogs, gimmie lean sausage, gimmie lean Burger, smart bacon, and smart ground. I also like veggie patch meatballs. These are all meatless products, but are quite tasty. I use naturally preferred organic ketchup, fat free miracle whip, and yellow mustard as condiments.
I take 2 tablespoons of Kaukauna swiss almond spreadable cheese, mix in 1 tablespoon any whey flavorless protein powder, spread it on 2 pieces of melba wheat toast, then top them with a piece of smart bacon. That makes a very tasty and satisfying lunch. I hope this helps you.
God bless you,
Annette
get some yogurt and put some fruit or whatever you want and make smoothies...i usually put strawberries and bananas. Get some cottage cheese to snack on....there is also a carb clever fruit ****tail. sometimes i boil chicken til it's very tender and shred it and put taco seasoning and cook it a little more.. then i put cheese on top and eat it with taco sauce or salsa or make my own guacamole. you can do that with beef too. I don't use flax seed, but omega 3 vitamins with flax...but they do have fish oil in them and if you're allergic it might not be a good idea. I hope this helps you some.
Hugs
Linda
Hi,
I'm about 9 months post op and I quit drinking liquid protein drinks because I didn't care for them, their taste and just couldnt handle drinking sweet stuff.
So I opted for "Power Crunch" Protein Bars that you can find right over to your left in one of those little squares. They provide 14 grams of protein per bar. Not alot but I do eat food as well...
I can't do veggies at all, no dairy, no eggs, no cottage cheese so I have to get Calcium from a pill.
I do see the interest in FLAX, let me share with you that it keeps your body regular and it is healthy also. I recommend getting a flax seed granola and adding it to your oatmeal from this website:
http://www.allstarhealth.com/de.aspx?&p=3124
I highly recommend the cinnamon and do read the bag, if you eat too much it will cause "a laxative effect"!!!!!
So just what do I eat?
Lunch meat from the deli, low fat turkey, roast beef, and even healthy choice ham. I eat a good amount of low carb low sugar juice, applesauce, mashed potatoes, (my comfort food) canned veggies are ok, I also eat pork - it is the other white meat, chicken, (I do not eat any of these meats in a can-ie., canned chicken or tuna).
I also eat high fiber cereals I get from my local food co-op or in the "organic" section of your local grocer. Look for "high protein" on the front and then read the label for other ingredients like sugars to avoid, etc.
I enjoy a banana now and again, finding the baby ones are easier to eat, and also I do enjoy canned fruits.
As for protein and a regular meal plan, it varies from day to day but I thrive on meats. I eat ground sirloin any way I can fix it and occasionally will purchase a larger portion so I can make meatloaf or meat balls in low sodium - low fat cream of mushroom soup. I cannot eat rice or pasta so I do take in my mashed potatoes.
I would recommend that you accomodate your taste buds daily and honestly what you prepare will be enjoyed!!
Hope that helps!
