Just wondering how to handle the subject of depression when taking the Psych evaluation. I am currently on anti-depressents but not depressed. I have been depressed in the past, but this medication is mostly for anxiety. Do I say just that?? Just curious if anyone had any advice. Thanks!

Just answer the questions honestly!!! Depression is actually a very normal symptom of people who are obese, that is what I was told it must also be a very normal symptom for those of us on the lowest side of the normal scale too!!! I am to the point of being almost below normal weight on the BMI scale and I still have a major battle with seasonal depression. I actually take two anti-depressant medications, one just from October until April just to do battle with seasonal depression. But again just answer all of the questions with honesty, after all that is your best defense. Jill

Hi Kim, For many years I was diagnosed with panic/anxiety disorder stemming from my cancer in 1990 and then undergoing a complete hysteretomy at age 31 and not being able to handle stress the same way ever again. Since that time, I was on meds for it and it was a huge help. I have panic/anxiety issues when faced with overpowering stress, or large crowds. One little pill takes that away immediately. When I had my psych consult, I explained the truth about what happened and how I was taking meds for it but only as needed, which was/is the truth. I still sometime face these issues today, but, it is less after WLS somehow. Being honest about it is not going to create a concern rather that you are understanding why you take meds for something and know how to handle it. The psych consult is to make sure that you fully understand what you are about to undergo and how you will handle the post op recovery and change of lifestyle. We all undergo some form of emotions and depression and sadness after surgery from the rapid weight loss but knowing deep inside yourself that you can handle it is what they want to know. I was with the psych guy 2 hours going over my entire life from birth and he covered issues regarding my family life, what jobs I had, and support. He mainly wanted to make sure I knew that there was going to be support for me pre-op and during my surgery and post op. I had researched the procedure for nearly a decade and knew what was expected of me and what changes would occur differ in all of us after the surgery. How we handle it is the key, and I don't believe I would be lying if I said all of us go through something post operative whether its emotions or sadness or some form of wonder in our minds. But in time it goes away and you start seeing results so rapidly that you become more amazed - those feelings of concern and emotions suddenly disappear and the feeling of WOW look at me now occur. Like Jill said, just be honest, and understand that they want to know you can handle the changes. Best of luck to you and always
