Just out of curiosity, has anyone here gone self pay?

I was just wondering what loan options are available and how much it typically costs if you do go self pay? Are the loan payments extremely high? Im just trying to consider all options in the event HAP ultimately denies me.

Colleen, The surgery is extremely expensive. It runs about 25-30,000 dollars all together, barring no complications....Please don't give up on fighting HAP that is why they do this!!! They depend on people getting tired of the fight and give up or self pay! Don't give them the satisfaction girl. You can do it. I know so many that have had to fight HAP but all have won as far as I know. It just is going to take a little work on your part. YOU go Girl!! Take care and don't let them win!!!---Toni

I haven't given up. Im just a planner. I like to get all my options under control so I know what direction I can move next when necessary. I guess Im anal that way. I haven't even begun the appeal process yet because my last PCP has not sent me my records even though I have requested them twice over.

You know, I know just the person to as but she no longer works at CORI so I will give you my best on this... Self pays are substantially less than what they bill the hospital for. a $6000.00 surgical fee will end up being paid at $1700.00 by an insurance company so doctors have a lot to work with. Some work more than others. I can't remember who you are having yours through but might I suggest Real Weight Loss Solutions through St. John's? Dr. Schuhknecht is head of surgery there and seems to make things happen rather quickly and efficiently. The number is 586-276-8130. As far as HAP is concerned I'm not sure if he takes it or if HAP will give you crap about it. I know one thing, I am doing great because through all the stupidity surrounding CORI he made sure I was taken care of. If I find anything else out I'll get back at you. Don't give up though when the hurdles start. You can do it. Stay focused. You ROCK!!! kp @ goal

Thanks Kevin, I will tuck his # away for future reference. As of right now, my plan was to go through HFH (Drs. Genaw and Carlin) as they are in my network and Ive heard nothing but good things about them both. We'll see what happens.

I am a self pay. I also had the DS instead of the RYN-Y. My total cost to have this done in Brazil last November, was under $13,000.00. That was doctor, hospital, some pre-op tests, air-fare, 2 weeks at a hotel post-op, visa, a private duty nurse for 2 weeks AND some souvineers. A year ago if someone had said I'd have WLS in another country I would have called them liars. LOL Do your homework and if you are intrested about my doc etc e-mail me privately and I will be more than happy to share that info and also why I chose the DS instead of the RYN-Y. No matter what, good luck in your endeavor for a healthier & better life. Patt

Kevin Hi, I am in the first phases of the insurance portion...I am working with Real Weight Solutions, but I am wondering did you have HAP and did theymake you go through the Cori centers? I had a lapband 5 years ago with Dr. wood...needless to say It was not success and I would rather mot be forced due to insurance reasons to use Cori, Let me know if you wouldn't mind. Thanks Tammi

Hi, I'm one of the lucky ones with BCBS MESSA. I'm not sure how HAP works but I see through other posts that they make you jump through the hoops. You picked the right place over CORI. For that matter any place over CORI would be good. I don't believe HAP can force you into CORI. Call Chuckie Real Weight Loss Solutions 586-276-8130 and see what she can do. She put the jam on for my TT. I was approved and cut within two weeks. Keep me posted. Lots a positive vibes. kp @ goal
