Pre-op 3 week liquid diet
I am having surgery through New Life Bariatric in Muskegon, MI on April 10th. They changed their program since my dad had his surgery, and now require a three week liquid diet. Has anyone experienced such a long period of liquid only intake? Today is my first day, and it is really hard. I thought this would be easy, as I have restricted myself to protien shakes and 1 solid meal for three months.
Hi Joyann. I had to do the 3 week, then my surgery was cancelled and I had to do a 2 week prior to my second surgery date. The first time it was pretty easy. I had done a "trial run" months earlier for 21 days to see if I could do it. However when I had to do the 2 week liquid diet, it was HARD. I think I was just tired of liquids. I can tell you that I found (and have heard others say this also) that it gets easier after the 3rd or 4th day.
Think about this Joyann... this will really prepare you for your new journey. It is important to have your liver shrunk as much as possible (this liquid diet will help do that) to give your surgeon the best possible view, particularily if they are doing it via lap.
Hang in there and you'll get through this part. It's very very worth it!

I am into my third week of liquids post-op and let me tell you, it is hard. Being able to eat fudgesicles (sugar and fat free) Helps alot. If you get discouraged, just remember that you are preparing yourself for what lies ahead post-op. If you need some other support, let me know I am just a hop, skip, and a jump away and we can catch a liquid lunch together sometime.
GOOD LUCK,
Jennifer
Thank you all for the encouragement! I posted the question, as I was feeling like I was the only one who had to do such a strict pre-op regimen. When both my parents had their surgeries, the most that was required was 3 days of liquids pre-op (but that was 2-3 years ago). I have read so many posts and profiles, and really hadn't heard much more than a one week liquid pre-op diet. Happy to know, that I am not alone!!!
If I had to do it over again, I would have been more strict last week with my diet...but I was in the "Last Supper" phase and pretty much consummed everything in sight! I did very well for three months taking protien and restricting my food intake. Hind sight is 20/20 I guess! I am looking forward to the challenges that this next three weeks will bring. I know that if I can make it through liquids pre-op, post-op will be a breeze!
Thanks again, for the insight!
