Any experience with Dr. Kam?
I dont have any info on Dr. Kam, but I had his partner Dr. Schram. I will say this though. A facility is only as good as the surgeons that they employ. Barix is the leader of bariatric surgery and they are the best in the nation. You can put your fears at ease. There are some gerneral surgeons that perform this surgery at other locations and they have a higher complication rate. When I talked to a nurse at Barix, she said she had been for 6 years and they have never had a fatality while she has been there. That information calmed me alot. I look at it this way, if I am going to have a medical procedure done, I am going to go to a specialist who does that procedure, not a general surgeon.
I am 9 days post-op and I have NOTHING negative to say about Barix. The place is Top Quality and that says alot coming from me because I am critical of everything.
I hope this helps you

I had my surgery with Dr Schram but due to a kinked bowl Dr kam did my surgery for that and he did an excellent job. I would recommend him to anyone. The hospital is also great. They have a great team of nurses that will take good care of you. Barix is the place to go. Good luck and take care. Sandy Elder
Hi Randi,
I went to Barix and had my surgery 6.5 years ago. I had Dr. Poplawski-Dr. Kam was not there at the time. I cannot say enough about Barix and the surgeons who are there. You will enjoy the fact that everything is geared to people of size. The gowns will fit with room to move. They have thought of everything. From the chairs and beds to gowns and tables and even have tong-like gizmo's to help you wipe your bottom. I worked there as a Patient Counselor for a year or so and met lots of the people who work together to ensure your surgery and recovery go really smoothly. A lot of the nursing staff have also had the surgery, so they have a true understanding. You will not experience any negativity, if your's is a typical stay. Another thing that is wonderful is the support groups they have. I am a support group leader and have been for 5 years now. I know a lot of the other leaders and you will enjoy becoming friends with so many others who have had surgery at Barix. I know I might seem like a Barix Cheerleader, but after knowing hundreds of people who have gone there, I know that the majority of people were really happy. One thing that I didn't realize is how many people who go to other places do not have FREE care afterwards. Many places do not have any support groups or even a Nutritionist. You will have all these things to help you make the very most of your surgery. You will have these support services for life for free. That tells me a lot about Barix. I know I am glad I went to a Surgical office and hospital that truly specialize in all the things that pertain to me as a Bariatric Patient. I wish you great success in your journey. My group is in Howell, the 2nd Sat. of every month and if you live within 45-60 minutes you are very welcome to come and join us. If you don't, take advantage of one of the other Barix Groups. The most successful patients are those who become a part of one of them. If I can ever help you in anyway, please e-mail me. Take Care,
Together in the Journey,
Sharna
I had Dr. Kam for RNY a few weeks ago. He and the staff of the Ypsi clinic were fantastic. I've had more than 23 major surgeries ( not WLS related) and I can tell you they were far and above the best hospital I've ever been through. I must have seen Dr Kam on the floor 2 or 3 times a day and the respiratory therapists were a riot, making me smile even when I felt bad. Their plebotomist (sp, sorry, you know, the blood draw tech) had the touch of a butterfly.
What impressed me the most was how each staff member cared about the others and did whatever needed to be done -- the first time I rang for help, it couldn't have been 30 seconds before someone popped their head in to check on me. I had some minor swelling that made me nauseas and I practically threw up on the nutritionist one morning -- and she was kind and comforting, when she didn't have to be. A wonderful staff all around.
From my surgeon review:
Dr. Kam is very professional and confident, yet warm and caring at the same time. I was very impressed when I saw him repeatedly on the hospital floor post-op, at least several times a day. His genuine confidence and caring reassured me tremendously. Dr. Kam clearly is well liked by his staff as well, from surgical staff to floor staff. His orders were followed rapidly and reliabily. Having undergone surgery more than 23 times, starting in early childhood, I can say with confidence that I have never had a more positive experience with staffing than I did at Barix Clinics. Every medicine was delivered quickly and gently, when I was uncomfortable the nursing staff went beyond their duty and were caring. Any call-out was anwsered in just seconds, it seemed. All of the staff members were relaxed and attentive, something I've never experienced in a large hospital. The ward was spotless, thanks to a cleaning staff always there. Thank you Dr.Kam and Barix (Ypsilanti) for such an upbeat and caring experience.
Good luck and speedy recovery! Dr. Kam is great.
Thank you all so much for the insight! I have had LOTS of medical issues in the past and LOTS of surgeries. I have been a bit hesitant in that Barix is an unknown hospital to me. I am used to Beaumont (a fantastic institution) and was unsure what to expect. Thanks for the info. I feel very reassured.
