Hi Barb, A Greenfield filter is a filter that they put in your artery in your neck it will prevent any blood clots you may develop from traveling to the lungs, ( a pulmanary embalizim) sp? Which is a complication with any major surgery. Hope this answers your question.---Toni

I had a greenfield filter put in before my surgery. I have a family history of blood clots so they wanted to be on the safe side. Its still in- dont feel it and will help me in the long run if i ever get a blood clot. The procedure isnt bad either- I was scared to death but then it was over. Shannon

Dayja, Everyone does not need a filter, the dr weighs your risks and then decides if you will need to have one put in. They factor in BMI,family history and prob other things also. I had one put in because all the women in my family have had blood clots and also my bmi was like 50 something. The heavier you are, the better the chances are that they will recommend one for you. Take care De
