Well, I found out yesterday that I can't drink Aquafina Bottled water!!! I got slightly ill 2 weeks ago while drinking it, but at that time I thought it was because I was pushing myself too hard that day. BUT, yesterday, I ended up dumping and the ONLY thing I had was another bottle of Auqafina so it HAS to be the culprit!! I was "ralphing" for a couple of hours and am still feeling crappy today! I know that they put different "things" in bottled water, but never did I think it would cause someone to dump!! NOW I know!

Hi Sally, Was it plain water? If it was it probably isn't the water it self it probably is that you are just drinking it to fast. In the beginning you really need to take tiny, tiny sips or water can get stuck just like eating to fast. Try drinking some hot tea. It will help to relax your pouch, Chances are if you vomited that much your pouch was probably spasming. If it continues to give you problems and you can't seem to keep anything down, you may want to call your surgeon, you could be developing a stricture. Not to worry, If that is what it is it is a smiple fix. But, chances are if that is the only thing that gave you a problem, I would say it probably is what I stated above. Hope you are feeling better. ----Toni

It was plain water and no I wasn't drinking it too fast!! I had only taken a few small sips. There is no way it could have been anything else. I was able to drink and eat after a couple of hours later on last night as well as I'm drinking and eating fine today!! If I had not gotten sick the time before (idential situation) I would say it wasn't so... but its just too much of a coincidence that this happened twice and the only common denominator was the Aquafina!

I am picky about bottled water now that I have had the surgery. A lot of it has to do with my taste buds though. I hate Aquafina. I am not sure how anyone can drink it. I personally think it has a weird taste to it. I even had trouble with it before I had surgery. I stick to Propel, Fiji, Evian, or Absopure. I have become a water snob I know. I also just bought a fridge that has a water purifier on it and I love it. You could also try getting a PUR water filter jug for your home. I agree about sipping though. Even if we sip we have to take time between sips. I wanted to drink so fast when I was first out of surgery. I am about a year ahead of you 1-20-05 was my date. I never had the ill feeling about the water, but I learned that I needed to take my time with the sips. Suzanne 300/153/150

No, you need sugar to dump. It can come from regular sugar or sugar from carbs (late dump) bu****er won't trigger insulin and the flood of fluid to follow. You more than likely flooded yourself! It will go through so fast you can't even get enough time to pee any of it out. kp @ goal

I got sick on plain water too. My surgeon claims it to be common, but my bariatric physician claims I am the 1st he has hear of. I had to flavor my water not to get really sick. I am 3 mos out, and now I can take a sip without getting sick, but more than that is still a no-no for me. So I use lots of different mixes.

A Thomas - I'm certainly glad that someone else experienced the same problem!!! Please, let me stress.. I was NOT drinking it too fast. I had taken several small sips over a period of a little over an hour - BOTH times. And water was all that I had so what else could have triggered it??? I was not drinking any faster, slower or otherwise than I do at all other times and I have not experienced a problem. I do not drink Aquafina outside of this situation, but unfortunately in this situation, Aquafina is the only water available so the next time I'll have to get a bottle of juice instead.

just to help a little... it's common for some WLS people to refer to getting ill from foods as "dumping" but dumping syndrome is a very specific phenomenon that believe it or not, most WLS patients don't even experience (according to the latest studies i've seen only around 33% of us have a problem with dumping.--- Not sure that statistic is true as most of us are not willing to test it out and see if we dump.) dumping syndrome is like Kevin said, a reaction caused from sugar (and sugar alcohols). I think it's from having too much insulin in your system (i might have that backwards, it might be from too little, i ALWAYS get hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic confused). Unless your water was sugared, it could not have been true dumping. HOWEVER, you got sick, and that's all that matters, if aquafina makes you sick, you know to avoid it. what we call it is not really important, your comfort and wellness is. i hope that helps.

Sally: I understand that you weren't drinking quickly and all, but you really can't "DUMP" on water. Kevin is absoultely right. It's sugar that causes dumping in the true sense of the word. I can't drink water from the small opening bottles as I get air in with it (no matter how small the sips) and it makes me feel ill (nauseated) and hurts like someone is sticking a knife in my breastbone. Go ahead and avoid the Aquafina, but try drinking other water out of a glass/cup and then kind of pour it into your mouth without the "sipping". At this point in time, I can now drink water from the large mouth bottles like Propel, etc... To me, getting the water into my mouth without the air is the key. I raise the cup to my lips, and tip it back and then open my lips and pour a little in, then swallow. I have offered this advice to a couple other people and it really helped them, so I hope it helps you, too! Take care! Pam
