I am considering going to PH and Dr. Bhesiana but now I find out they had a death of a woman in 2002 after ?perforating the stomach. I would like to hear from others who have been there about the saftey. Also, has anyone gone outside of Michigan to say New York or other places where the lap band has been done more. I am wondering with bc/bs of michigan if I can go where I want in the US as this gives more options of picking the most experienced surgeon. Thanks so much!

Sorry, I am unaware of the competancy of the Port Huron Doctors, but I do know that you should be able to go anywhere in the united states that accepts blue cross. I have blue cross of Arkansas and I am going to have my surgery done by a Michigan Doctor next week.

Cheryl - it's all relative. PH had a death, was it the only one? This death was out of how many successful surgeries?? If that surgeon had done 100 surgeries, then 1 death would mean something to me. But if he's done 3000 surgeries, then it wouldn't mean much to me. You need more information inorder to make an educated decision. Sounds like you're on the right track researching the surgeon and finding out his/her sucess rate. Keep it up!!! Wishing you the best on your wls journey, Laurie

Hi Cheryl I am sure that with your BCBS would allow you to go whereever you want as long as your primary refers you there. Did you know that Dr.Kemmeter at MMPC in Grand Rapids also does the lap band procedure. Dr. Kemmeter is a very compitant and a very nice surgeon. Let me know if you would like there phone#. I think that you would be very happy with this surgeon. Good Luck. Hugs- Char

Are your talking about the City council woman? From what I read about her case when she started experienceing problems she went to first one local Detroit hospital and then later another. She didn't tell either of them about her lap band surgery. Without all the information The doctors and nurses treating her didn't know what to look for if she had been up front with them chances of them saving her life would have been much better. Sure a perferated stomach is a complication but it didn't have to lead to death. Because of the need for aftercare, regular checkups and fills I would choose a surgeon closer to home then NY. Mary
