Just curious to see how much time others took off work after the surgery. I have talked to several people and with no complications it seems that 2 weeks is the earliest. Is this about average? Melissa

My work said I could have 6 weeks short term disability for my open RNY so I took 6 weeks even tho I felt could have gone back after 4. I think if you have a LAP procedure done instead of a open one the recovery time is shorter.

I had open RNY on 12/19/05 and was back to work in two weeks with no problems. One variable to keep in mind is the nature of your job and its physical demands. Good luck! Theresa

I work with developmentally disabled people. I don't have any heavy lifting or anything. I am mostly introducing my consumers to life and options in the community, some job coaching, but nothing physically straining. I do do a lot of driving, so that could be an issue if driving is limitted. Thanks for posting, anything helps...LOL Melissa

Melissa, It all depends on if you are having La*****t, and when your Dr. will release you for work. At the very least you will need to be off the pain meds before going back to work, and have the staples removed. I stopped the meds after a week or so and only took them at night for awhile after that. I took a month off however. I would probably have been okay after 2-3 weeks, but am glad I had the whole month off. Good luck to you! Cheryl
