Psych evaluation question
I went to a psych that was referred to me by Cori Centers (he normally supports the WLS option). He didn't give me any tests, but did ask questions. He explained to me that he just has to determine if psychologically I was going to be able to survive going through the stage where I can only eat a few hundred calories a day. He said that the food depravation can be mentally very difficult for people and that is something that not everyone can handle. If you get comfort from food and don't have another means to pacify yourself after the surgery you can get very depressed. He passed me, but did tell me that I was still grieving the loss of my father (very emotional on the subject) and may want to seek councelling to help me deal with that. I have heard that some psych's not use to the WLS thing are more difficult to get past though.
Good Luck!

i wanted to add that i was also in mourning for a parent and was diagnosed with a major depression but it was specific (had a focus and cause) and so was considered healthy and not a problem to my surgery. They are looking for non specific depression which may be due to a chemical imbalance as that can tend to affect a persons willingness to comply with the post surgery program.
My psych evaluation consisted on verbal questioning and a true or fals test. The verbal part was on my understanding of the surgery, and the lifestyle changes after.
The test.. I don't know what it is supposed to tell them but, some of the questions on the test just plain weird! It was some kind of personality test.
One of the questions I remember is the first one:
I enjoy reading auto magazines? True or False
What does that have to do with anything? LOL There were several other questions that were just "out there" as well.
I will not know the results until next week, but the therapist said she didn't see any "red flags" and she was sure I would be good to go.
So we shall see.
