Hi Everyone! I am so happy to have found a board where everyone is so kind and supportive of one another. I am in Michigan and Dr. Kerry Kole is my surgeon. I have a couple questions - open rny vs. laproscopic - can't you get the micropouch both ways or am I totally confused. You are all so generous with your comments, please, any information on this topic is greatly appreciated - and do I decide which surgery or does the Doc - and is one "better" than the other - with laproscopic do you have to get it revised??? Thanks so much. Kim

Kim - WELCOME to the Michigan Boards!!!! And congrats on your approval for surgery!! As far as lap/open... it's mostly a personal choice. I don't think one is better then the other as far as the weight loss goes. Most people say that lap heals faster and lets you go back to work faster. I had mine open and asked to have it open. I was off pain med very fast and heal perfectly. Dr. Kole will go over the options for you on Monday in a group setting. He'll tell you all about ALL of the different procedures, then when you see him one on one, he'll advice what he feels is best for you based on YOU. (your health, size, what you want out of the surgery, etc) And of course, there are times when the surgeon will start out lap and have to convert it to an open surgery (he'll tell you that too) Write down all your questions and take them in with you. Wishing you the very best in your wls journey. Hugs, Laurie

Kim, welcome to the board. I dont have much to offer on lap vs open. I had to do it the way the Dr chose. Good luck with everything and hope to hear more from you.

I too had my surgery by Kerry Kole back in may 2004. I am down 155 pounds and only have 25-35 to go. You can get the micro pouch both ways. The doctor will decide which is best for you. His decision will be based on your current weight and health. With the micro pouch you should never have to have a revision. Open they can see everything, if there are any other problems and remove the gallbladder if neccesary. Hope this info helps and remember the pouch is a tool and to be used as such. You will not loose weight instantly or fast even but if you start a regular exercise program and follow the diet you will lose inches first and then notice the loss on the scale. Hope this helps you.
