WOULD YOU DO IT AGAIN?

Annette, Thank you for starting this thread. It's just what I needed this morning. I have my first appointment with the surgeon this afternoon. I'm not saying that I'm not having second thoughts. And yes they are related to the complications after surgery and yes I do work in the medical field so I see the worst of them. My PCP, although supportative is not in favor of the surgery but will support it afterward. Most of it is because of my age. I'm at the top end of the age scale for the surgery. My other concerns are that I live alone, my family live 3 hours away from me. Some of my friends are supportive some not. The interesting thing is that the one who is most unsupportive is willing to go with me to the orientation today. I'm happy to learn that people would do it again. Jeanne

Well I could preach, I could complain, I could do alot of things but you know what! Every person is different in every way! Have you ever just sat in the mall and looked at all the people walking around in the mall. Bet you can't find to many people who look the same. This surgery affects everyone differently just like obesity affects everyone differently. Some people are having complications that could have occured with or without the surgery. Some people have complications because of the side effects from the surgery. Hernias need to be researched. How many people have hernias that have not had WLS, ALOT!! But you don't hear about the average joe. How many people have lost weight and had no problems and don't post on this board anymore so they won't be able to post a rely to your question? I guess you can gather that I would do it again, sure there are a few things I would change. I am 2.5 years out and I still forget to chew my meat. I have chewed my food one way for 40 years and you can't expect yourself to change your BAD habits over night or over a few years. This is something that you will have to work with the rest of your life and take the ugly with the good. This is a decision that you have to make and no one else can make it for you! Remember that even when you are "thin" you still get the people who say you are "TO THIN", "You look sick", "Do you have cancer?" I still get the "you never should have done this, you are so skinny now!" PLEASE!!! Give me a break! Whatever you do, don't do this for ANYONE else! Do it for yourself because you can NEVER PLEASE EVERYONE!!! Just do ALOT of research and ALOT of soul searching!! Ok I am done preaching now! Take what you will and can from my ranting and remember that your decision will affect the rest of your life!

My name is Nick Scroggins and I would. I had a rough time after surgery but I was fine in 4 months out. I was diabetic, I had diabetes, and I weighed 330 lbs. I am now weighing in at 259, my diabetes is gone. I have no food or any other issues, and I would do it again, but it is not a pic-nic or a walk in the park. Don't have it unless you need it. Nick

Yes- Absolutely- In a heartbeat. I'm 2 years out, am at goal, and am having no problems staying there. I had no complications. Had TT and boob job a year ago. And I am extremely happy. I'm usually a lurker, but had to post and tell you that this surgery is the best thing you can do for yourself. And that's why you do it- for yourself, not for your family, for your friends, or for your doctor. Nancy

Hi Annette I would do this every year if i had to. I went into surgery with undiagnosed sleep apnea. When the docs woke me up, i stopped breathing and ended up on a vent for a week. They thought i would end up on life support the rest of my life cause my throat kept closing up when they tried to remove it. Then a month later, i had an attack at home and quit breathing again, right in front of my kids. I ended up in a coma for four days and on a vent another week. If i had not done this surgery, i would be dead already, i'm sure of that. I had uncontrollable high blood pressure, couldn't walk more than 5 feet, and was just miserable. i was 360 pounds and am 5'3. Now, i work full time, and the energy is endless. i am 10 pounds past my docs goal, lost over half my body, have so much confidence i never expected. My life is so wonderful now, i could have never imagined it to be this good! I am very comfortable now and really love who i see in the mirror now. Hugs Linda

I think it's confusing to a lot of people because some are talking about Lap-Band on this message board and some are talking about RNY. There are usually more serious complications with RNY.

You are right that this message board has both as the lap band & RNY are both weight loss surgeries, but the majority of people here have had RNY & pretty much everyone that has answered this post has had RNY.

I have had no problems at all with my surgery. I am a little over 2 years out and went from taking blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, thyroid meds to taking a multi vitamin. My cholesterol went from 329 down to 128. My sugar ran around 295 fasting and now they are 75-90. My blood pressure is now running 112/60. I went from barely walking to the bathroom to walking 6 miles a day (that has changed because of my arthritis) but I can walk without getting out of breath. I didn't do this for the "looks" but they are an added benefit. I WOULD DO THIS OVER IN AN INSTANT. Even if I had had problems, they could not have been worse than what I was going through as a super morbidly obese person. You have to decided what is best for you...do your research & by all means find a PCP who will support you. By that I don't mean one that will say this is not a danger, only one that will support your decision to better your life. They can still do that & know the risks. I think it is great that we have a place that we can come & not only hear the good of a surgery, but also those that have had problems. They don't post to deter from having the surgery, only to open your eyes that the problems are possible & do happen.

yes because I am 50 and had diabetes and hypertension and sleep apnea all which have been CURED!!! by WLS My surgen Dr. Tali Zeni did a great job 11/14/05 I had non evasive laproscopic RnY no tubes no big scars no draining NO COMPLICATIONS, I had this done at ST. Mary's Mercy Hospital in Livonia Mi. But I was 268 I weigh 223 now and what can I say but yes. I really believe had I not had this surgery I would have died soon. I chose to risk it all to have a long healthy life. But you have to make the final decision. My faith has taught me to fear not! Good Luck. Susan Mettert
