Suggestions needed: Feeling sick
Hi all,
I've been offline a couple of days because I've been too sick to get downstairs to the computer.
Thursday I got permission from the nutritionist to try one thing pureed without straining - some soup - for lunch to see how it would go.
At first I felt awesome - had something for my tummy to work with for a change. But by Thursday night, I felt quesy and gross. I'm not sure if it was going back on the Lortab or not - the belly button pain required more help than just tylenol was giving.
By Friday morning, when I spoke with the nurse, I was having dry heaves. She spoke with the doctor and they called in some reglan - which my mom who is a nurse says helps with both quesiness and sparking your intestinal track to get moving. They also told me to take some milk of magnesia to try to get things moving.
As of this morning, I'm on Lortab & Reglan which together make me goofy and light headed. Any attempt to drink protein makes me heave. The milk of magnesia hasn't helped yet.
I guess I will page the on-call doctor if I'm not better in a couple of hours. Any thoughts - other than I'm a stupid idiot for talking the nutritionist into letting me have pureed soup? Did any of you manage to do this to yourself? What worked?
I'll check in a bit later - I'm going to drag my carcus upstairs to try to get a bit more hydration.
Thanks,
Michele
Hi Michele,
I had my surgery on December 20th. While I have not been sick from food. I was having a lot of trouble with fluids. Didn't get sick just felt terible when I drank them. What I found out was I as drinking a little to fast and getting air in. I know this probally dosn't relate to your issue just wanted to let you know that somone else was have a bit of trouble also. I hope you feel better soon!

30 Pounds gone for ever!
HI Michelle,
I sure hope today goes better for you. I had my surgery on Thanksgiving Day so I am a tad further out than you are. Though I had the DS and not the RYN I too had these issues at first. I had dry heaves on day 4 post-op and thought I would burst everything open but that didn't happen. Thank God!
What worked for me on that day (WHICH WAS AGAINST ALL THE RULES) was I took an extremely small piece of a saltine (it was maybe a quarter inch square tops) put it in my mouth and let it disolve before I swallowed. It didn't make me sick so then a few minutes later I took a larger piece, then another and then another. The pieces were never larger than a 1/2 inch. It probably took me an hour to eat that one saltine but my nausea & what we call the "foamies" over in DS land went away. I also continued to do that whenever I thought I felt this coming on.
I still get a little nauseous when I need to eat. Not bad but it is my personal signal that I need to put something in me. Could this perhaps what is going on with you? I am no doctor and we are all different so maybe I am way off base here. I just hope you get past this soon as it certainly is no fun.
Take care of yourself and keep us posted on how you are doing.
