Are you still smoking?

I just spent 3 hours watching my brother-in-law die of lung cancer. He quit smoking 14 YEARS ago, but it snuck up on him anyways. He was diagnosed in August and died tonight. If you haven't witnessed anyone die of lung cancer and you are still smoking, I'm sure you'd quit after this experience. Do youself a HUGE favor and rid yourself of cigarettes by any way possible. I can tell you, firsthand, it was not pretty. I hope I'm not offending anyone here. Just wanted to do my part to know that his misfortune is used for some common good. One of his last wishes was to let anyone I know who smokes understand that the earlier you quit, the better off you are. He smoked 3 packs a day for 25 years. If he could move the clock backwards, knowing what he knew before tonight, he would have tried harder to quit. This is NOT a scare tactic, just a reality check. May God welcome my brother-in-law Randy into a new place where he no longer suffers. Jon

last year i watched my mom die of lung cancer. it was a horrible, long, drawn out sequence of horrible events. Every doctor involved said the same thing, "it was definitely the cigarettes". I agree with you 100%. and i'm sorry about your loss.

Jon, as a hospice nurse, I saw it over and over again. Young people dying slow, miserable deaths, leaving small children behind. I am so sorry for your loss, but your courage to bring this topic out and have people talk about it. If it helps ONE person quit, you and your BIL have done a bigger service than you will ever know. From th e other specturm of life, when I was a labor and delivery nurse, you could always tell a smoker by their placenta, sorry to be gross, but our babies get second hand smoke effects from a very early stage. I agree, if you smoke, QUIT. Carol

Jon~So sorry for your loss!! My Dad had lung cancer and although he didn't die from the cancer (they went in and removed the spot on his lungs) he never made it out of the hospital from that surgery...so ultimately it was the lung cancer that killed him...it was a long 3 weeks of pain!! ((((((HUGS))))) for you and your family as you go through this!!! Hugs, Cheryl

Jon, Having a young son who smokes, each time he lights up I fear for him, I will print the post you have given us today so that Randys words will touch one person personally. Sometimes it takes something as graphic as seeing someone die from smoking to rattle someones cage. Just like it took seeing my mom have a heart attack and hear her doctor say, if you only would get this weight off this simply would not be such an issue for you, that is what it took to rattle my cage and make me finally take the steps to my weight loss. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family at this difficult time, thank you so much for sharing with us your experience Jon. Jill

Jon... I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. Erin PS; Thank you for your reminder to us all... I grew up with parents who smoke, and I worry to this day about the damage it has and still may do to me.

Jon, I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for taking the time to post this to try to help others, in your time of grief. My father died from lung cancer that metastasized to his bones, and all of his major organs. I was only 7yrs. old at that time, but he warned me not to smoke. I did anyhow, but quit 9 yrs. ago. IF YOU SMOKE, QUIT NOW! Everyone thinks "it won't happen to me" until it does. You and your family are in my prayers. God bless you Jon, Annette
