Well, it's happening - I'm losing my hair. It's a bit shorter than my picture, and I know that having it shorter may help. However, I'm at a loss as to what to do next. Do I: Keep combing my hair constantly, hoping that it will eventually stop? Shave my head and wear a wig? Up my protein and/or use biotin? I drink 50 grams of protein a day, but haven't tollerated protein bars as of 4 months out. Use Rogaine?

Well uping your protein would be a good thing. I don't know if it'd stop your hair loss though. Before I got sick I was getting 100 grams of protein a day in and my hair was still falling out in handfuls. My Christmas present was getting my hair done (geeeese is that expensive now days $70 for cut, highlight, and style) Mine was almost shoulder length and now the back is wacked off and the front is left a little long. I am noticing that I don't notice the hair loss anywhere near as much with it shorter. BTY: I've been taking the biotin 2500 mg and didn't notice any difference, although some people swear by the stuff. Laurie

Try Nioxin also, you can usually get it at a salon. I know the chain one (Grondin's?) at Macomb Mall has it. I used it and it helped. its a three step program. Kind of expensive though.

Rhonda, I have saved this post by another MI OH member because if this ever happens to me, I'm going to try it. Kristine Bley wrote this a while back "I drink Isomil SOY baby formula. After about a week, my hair quit falling out! I add either Carnation Instant Breakfast for a spoon full of Ovaltine!" Sheryl In the Zoo

I had a few questions about the hair loss thing myself! I mean, I haven't seen any bald heads on here yet, so I was curious as to how bad it really gets.... I would love to know ahead of time what I could do to prevent all this. (Or at the very least keep it to a minimum!) Does it get terribly bad?

Rhonda- I don't post much but had to respond! I too have used Nioxin and it did work for me, mind you, not over night though! It took a few months. My hair started thinning out infront by my bang area. It all came back! Nioxin has a whole line of hair products. All very good. For different types of hair also. It is a little costly but I'm a hair stylist and I can get it for you cheaper!!! Let me know O.K? Don't panic...it WILL stop thinning out! Hope I helped! ~Mary~ P.S. I wouln't do the WIG THING!!!

Most of us lose hair at some point after surgery. And not just WLS either. Hair loss following any major surgery is very common, and there's really not a whole lot you can do about it except wait for it to stop. People talk about the hair loss/protein connection, but I've done a lot of searching to find medical studies that support this theory, and to be honest with you, there don't seem to be any that do so. Anecdotally some people say that increasing protein intake helps, but science has yet to prove that. I hope your hair loss slows down soon. Brenda

Funny - I had neurosurgery to remove a tumor off my brain in 1990 and the only hair loss I had was the area that they shaved to operate! That, combined with the fact I was under the knife for about 7 1/2 hours....

Hi Rhonda, I just freaked out about this in Oct/Nov/Dec...... My hair is Very thin now, HOWEVER, i have noticed that in the last 1.5wks it is NOT falling out as much any more!!! THERE is light at the end of the tunnel. Get in your protien, and take biotin and vitiman E together daily. It has helped me, now granted it took almost 2.5mths, BUT, it won't all be gone, and I do notice new hair growth! Best of luck! Tam 268/172/???
